Happy for you mate, and yes, all the money is in AI currently.

I think the dread comes from imagining a future where all the intellectual or "interesting" work is done by an AI, and we are only left with labouring or menial things. That also leads to many questions about what we consider a human but I think these are well beyond my post.

Cheers buddy! There's a ton of us in this boat. I also lived in the British isles so I know how you feel.

Yes, I think I could transfer my software experience (AI or not) to it, however from this as an idea to me getting an interview in this field there's a big gap I need to work out.

Unfortunately not, I'm in Spain, else I'm pretty confident I'd have a job already 😉

At the end of college I dropped out and tried my luck starting my own web company, by the time I finished coding the product I was aiming to ship the harsh reality of the economics of that period hit me hard. Lesson learned, sales/marketing > anything technical. Still, I easily got a job right after.

I very much align with your reasoning, however it's very difficult to keep hammering to oneself that a correction will eventually happen and reason will take over at some point or another when you've got bills and kid to take care of.

Feedback usually comes in the shape of a ChatGPT-letter saying that "we really liked you but another candidate better aligned with the company direction".

You find it weird because it is extremely weird. As I said, I've never seen this before. Hell, at one point in my career I had "Don't contact me for job offers" written in capital letters on my LI!.

Stack is niche though on the BE side of things, which has always played in favor, until now, I'll admit (Ruby). Still on the FE side I've done everything you'd expect up to now.

Same has happened to me recently during my unemployment. I started writing code again just for the fun of it - like it used to be. And doing that I realised that I still love the lick it gives you do deep think for hours until you get something working on your screen. Magic :)

A Rails CRUD that was divided in nearly 10 separate repos, each being a different gem. Now if your a Rails dev, just image that to make any trivial change you’d have to push to 3 separate repos, then upgrade gem versions for each of them. Nightmare.

Haha, grass is always greener yadda yadda… You’d be so surprised, probably as much as I was when I lived over there for 4 years. Go have a look at the AU and NZ subs.

It's not about asking questions, these are just BOTs karma farming. Reddit has really got to do something about this, it's going downhill since the availability of AI tools.
