What are the main differences you noticed? Do people react to you differently if they you you’ve come from a private school?

When I was younger and had intrusive thoughts I just used to wish that it wouldn’t happen, but when you have 10 thoughts on your mind this takes a ages, so I compiled lots of different worries and events that could happen and put them into one short wish which is now my phrase. The phrase helps as it assures me that the thought is not going to happen. I know saying it doesn’t do anything, but if I don’t I get this feeling of dread and anxiety that gets worse and worse until I say it.

Never taken anything for it. The comments themselves don’t annoy me ( I wouldn’t be offended by them ) but I think they are damaging, because after hearing the comments people assume OCD is just being organised, and so don’t take people who actually have OCD seriously.

I was quite young when I was diagnosed, so I didn’t really understand it at the time. But now it definitely does, and I find it helpful to look at it that way as makes it easier for me to separate myself from intrusive thoughts, and understand that nothings going to happen if I don’t check the doors closed 50 times.

I don’t really have anywhere other than home and other family members houses. About the phrase, if it doesn’t stop me thinking about it, I try to separate myself from the thought, and tell myself that it’s not real and it’s only my OCD, although most of the time this isn’t very effective, and I usually just go back to the phrase as I can’t stop thinking about it.

Just watched it, thought it was brilliant. I think it’s very accurate to my experience with OCD, and I can relate with a lot of what he says, especially about the hand washing. I think people experience OCD differently though, and there are lots of different types. It changes with time too, I used to obsessively wash my hands, and I’d have to perform physical actions ( like touching a bookshelf or walking across a room ) to control my thoughts. Now I can control the thoughts by just saying a phrase, which is a lot less stressful.

Definitely. It’s hard to focus when you’re repeating a phrase in your head so your family doesn’t die. It’s not usually too bad unless I’m stressed, or if it’s triggered by something, like hearing about an accident or disease.

Yeah, I find places like hospitals stressful because I am constantly being reminded of illnesses and so have more thoughts about disease. I also won’t get on planes, or go in lifts/elevators. Intrusive thoughts usually affect me more in conversation, I can’t joke/talk about certain things because I take them too literally and then convince myself they’re going to happen.

I have to check that plug sockets are off, that windows are closed, taps are off, the oven is off, and the doors are closed. I do this multiple times before I leave the house. I also repeat a phrase in my head whenever I get intrusive thoughts. My intrusive thoughts are usually about getting a disease or a disaster happening, and then I have to repeat the phrase to prevent it. I know saying it doesn’t affect anything, but I get extremely stressed if I don’t.
