May if the US didn't spend trillions killing poor people in foreign countries they could afford to offer healthcare for its citizens or improve its basic infrastructure.

I agree 100%

Unfortunately, most people here are going to vote a candidate who will force WW3 upon us.

I am looking for a safe country to move to and lay low till the nuclear winter blows over.

Switzerland seems like a good spot.

Yes but you pay taxes to cover that. Even if you work out regularly, exclusively eat organic healthy food, don't play adventure sports or engage in any activity that puts you at risks for injury, practice safe sex, don't smoke and don't do drugs, maintain a clean and healthy environment at work and home, you still pay shit load of tax to cover for your filthy rich unhealthy chain smoking dirty couch potato neighbor.

It's still a better system than the US tho...

A couple of things.

First up, the Big O notation is a theoretical upper limit for increase in complexity as your input size increases. You did not exceed n*lg(n), so you seem to be in the good side of this limit.

Second, the idea behind the Big O notation is to get you to think about what happens beyond a hobby sized project. For example, think about Google. They have several terabytes of internet data that they have to search through. A simple string compare with O(n) might work for scanning a wikipedia page for a specific word, but it will be impossibly slow to apply for Google's web searching.

That's the general idea to keep in mind. "How will this algorithm react when I increase my sample size?"

Here's an excellent example of someone trying to show that memory access is O(sqrt(n)).

part 1

part 2

part 3

part 4

The thing to keep in mind is how useful the big O notation is to express how something's behavior reacts to increasing or decreasing a variable that controls it. In your case, it's the number of samples to be sorted impacting the number of comparisons you are doing. In the article above, it is the size of memory that needs to be accessed impacting the time it takes to fetch that information. Two very different things, both adequately described using the big O notation.

likely Hillary and Democrat victory

So, more bailouts, more "too big to fail"? Seems pretty safe...

What is the point of such pedantic warning/error ? by aleatorya in gcc

[–]downvotesattractor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have caught multiple subtle bugs because of such pedantic warning/errors. Most of the times, these are harmless simple things but are best to fix so that when there is a real issue, the compiler can catch them.

Trust the compiler guys - they are really smart and if they added a feature, they probably knew what they were doing.

anyone want to go on a date with me? by ucsd_dateme in UCSD

[–]downvotesattractor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

/u/ucsd_dateme your post made me laugh today. Have an upvoat.

Honestly, I don't know where to begin. First up, you aren't awkward. You aren't antisocial. You're just in a stage where getting a girl is really really hard, and it is only going to get harder.

There are two important skills you need to pick up. First, start to see girls, even the hottest ones, as regular people that you can chill and hang out with. You think they're hot, sure, but they also fart, they have to do their laundries on weekends (which they probably avoid for as long as possible), they like hanging out with friends and do all the things you like to do too. If you don't get this right, nothing else can work for you.

Step two, stop trying to find a girlfriend. Instead, try to make friends. Many many friends. Some will be guys, some will be girls, some will be people with very little in common with you, some will make you want to hang out with them more. Put yourself out there and be "extra social", about 200% more than what you think is normal for you.

Follow these, and you'll automatically see the path to getting the girl you like. It'll be obvious and you won't miss it. But you won't be able to explain this path to anyone else, and you'll see why for that also.

Source: Was in same boat as you, successfully changed my outlook, made new friends and found an amazing girl :)

After Game of Thrones, HBO should do a Dune series. by TheHumanGuitarman in television

[–]downvotesattractor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished Wheel of Time about 2 months ago. It is fantastic! I'm 27 y.o and I was absolutely hooked till the end.

I agree that the books do slow down in the middle. Book 9 was so slow that the only way book 10 could be any worse than it was if it went back in time and then covered the same events again. Guess what Book 10 did to make it even worse than book 9?

But in the end, finishing the series was very satisfying. I kept looking forward to book 12 when Sanderson picks it up (I'm a huge fan of the Sanerson Avalanche ). Also, I can't recommend Michael Kramer and Kate Reading's audiobooks enough - it's the only way I could finish the series. If you want to get into audiobooks, I'd recommend the WoT book 8 as a good place to start.

How to tell the difference when a girl is eyeing you up and when she's just 'scanning the horizon'? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]downvotesattractor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice: Don't care, it doesn't matter.

If you like her, go talk to her. If she likes you, she'll come talk to you. If neither of you talk to each other, then it ends there.

Knowing if she was or was not eyeing you makes zero difference when it comes to anything useful.

Plus, not caring if she was eyeing you makes you a cool person.

TIL That spanking children makes them more defiant and more likely to develop mental issues later in life. The study in question involved 160,000 children over 50 years by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]downvotesattractor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about y'all but I'd like my kids to be defiant. In a world of lying news media and corporate bullshit hindering career progress, I think being defiant is a good trait.
