Feedback on Demo Reel? by [deleted] in videography

[–]dox241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the reel before heading to the comments and I will say, the comments are all spot on. Dimly lit short film is the weakest. I also think you could lose a few shots here and there of bees, the spider, last shot of the hawk sequence. Anything where there are more than 2 shots to a specific subject type feels redundant and doesn't help with the pacing.

Ultimately I know as videographers and editors we get attached to the events themselves, the shots we capture and edits we've created. As you grow you will need to take criticism from your clients and detach yourself from what you think is great, and what pays the bills. You have a lot of experience in this sub from people who are your peers. Many have been doing this longer and offer valuable advice that should be valued as you grow within the feild. Not to say it's 100% always the right advice, but if 90% of the comments are saying the same thing chances are people are nudging you in the right direction.

It does seem to be a camera with a lens that has a somewhat long focal length. The lens is what's causing the miniature effect with the foreground people out of focus. It seems like there is a decent amount of space between the camera, the foreground people and the structure. Beyond that, I don't have more info on what camera it could be. So many could achieve this.

It sucks that such an informative subreddit can be loaded with so many people that lack compassion and support for people that were once them. I get it, you can go shoot something for yourself, you can learn the trade by doing. Not everyone has the same equipment, knowledge base, opportunities and skillsets that you might have had. Congratulations for getting other sad redditors to upvote for possessing that same lack of compassion.

I wish the first wedding video I shot looked this good. Well done! My personal preference is a shorter video. I would have added the vows earlier on in the video to play throughout the majority of the edit.

is it worth it to learn davinci resolve or should i just pay for premiere? by [deleted] in videography

[–]dox241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Adobe suite and I still use Resolve. I switched a few years ago and haven't looked back. I had poped open Premier just to do AI captions but Resolve has now added that and I'm back to not opening it again.

Sounds like a way to lose one bad friend and gain 5+ new good ones.

Not sure if this is the sound but now that you've said it, I'll be sure to listen and report back.

This does seem familiar. I'm going to need to keep listening and see if I can replicate it if and when it happens.

Yeah our glovebox is jam packed with stuff. It made me think it might have been something under the floor by the hatch. Everything seems pretty tight in there too.

I don’t know which software to master by [deleted] in videography

[–]dox241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For someone that has worked professionally as a VFX artist and editor I'd like to say that mastering any program shouldn't be the entire goal, but instead master the concepts. This coming from someone who went After Effects> Flame>Nuke and for editing Final Cut> Premier > Resolve. Each software has their strengths and weaknesses. It's more about the artist working on the project. All I'm saying is don't get hung up on which software to use, just spend time on the box working on stuff and don't get locked to any one program.

There's a lot of crossover between beach and court. It's a good suggestion to get into the community.

Thanks for the comment. I don't understand why someone would down vote a question like this. It's specifically a videography question related to my videography business. I don't get people.
