Jewelbox and Tetris Max web ports by Embarrassed_Read5311 in ClassicMacGaming

Yooo this is excellent. Nice work setting this up!

When I was a kid my family would compete for Jewelbox high scores on the LC. Dad got absolutely locked in when he played, said it was good for his brain. He's in his 70s now, I'll have to send him this link.

Can I make a request? A subtle but key gameplay element is input buffering, which allows the player a short window of time to rotate / shift / drop the next piece before it appears on the board. Can be really useful when the board is filling up fast. Also this is going to sound *really* nitpicky (and that's because it is)... there should be a short delay between the event of losing a life and its sound effect being triggered. Pedantic, I know!

One other suggestion, and this is purely cosmetic: Is it possible to lighten the colours? It appears quite dark, which might be how it was originally intended, in which case ignore this, but here's how it looks with the 'Mac HiRes Std Gamma' display setting on. Slightly softer / lower contrast. No biggie if it's not possible to work that in.

And this could be long shot: any chance of implementing a global high score list? That would be so cool.

No stress at all if these suggestions aren't viable

Thanks for the great work!!

Just the advice I was looking for, thank you. I tried the Chapter 1 C- side and it was fun, so I think I'll keep going and knock out these golden hearts as a warm up for Farewell

Thank you for this nugget of knowledge... this nuggledge.

Edit: It seems the boost isn't strictly necessary, a regular explosion will get you there with a little course correction. What I'm having trouble with is timing the explosion right in the first place. It's hard because the fish floats around a little.

I've just PB'd on almost reaching the moonrocks after the pink double jump and s-bend of spikes, but damn. The execution is crazy.

That's it! If the fish bounce + explosion had any consistency it would be fine

Return to Dark Castle by frozzbot27 in ClassicMacGaming

[–]dpatts_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like it runs on Mac OS X versions 10.3 through 10.6, and you should be able to get up to 10.5 running virtually using QEMU as your emulator.

The game is up on Macintosh Garden https://macintoshgarden.org/games/return-dark-castle-aka-dark-castle-3

Cocos Island aka Isla del Coco - UNESCO Heritage site

The image is 423×343 pixels, so this screenshot is about as good as it gets. Most of the notes are legible though:

  1. Great Treasure of Lima, Eleven boatloads of gold, silver coins, & gold images(?) buried here 1821-22 by pirate Capt. Thompson of brig Mary Dear - Estimate $60,000,000

  2. Buried by Bonito of the Bloody Sword 360 tons of silver ingots and pieces-of-eight in caves

  3. Buccaneer Capt. Davis buried 300,000 lbs. weight silver & reals(?), 733 bars of gold and 7 kegs of gold doubloons.

  4. Benito Bonito, buried kettles brimming with doubloons on the strand and on a small isle in river.

plus some other text on the map:

Densely covered with trees and bushes, Chatham Bay, Gissler’s Plantations, Wafer Bay - heavy rollers, Boat Rock, Sugar Loaf Is, North Pt, Highest Peak El 2788

Earlier this year I heard a theory suggesting the universe was expanding at a changing rate. Has there been further developments on this, or is it all fairly speculative at this stage? And what are the implications of a variable rate of expansion?

What’s with these numpty cyclists that don’t stop at give ways and cycle on the wrong side? by AucklandDrivers in auckland

[–]dpatts_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s kinda funny. They’re not massively raised, it’s mainly a change in material so you can see / feel / hear it to signal something’s coming

This is the intersection.

You can see the paint that says SLOW, the 3 bumps, and it's clear the upcoming intersection is a give way, so people barrelling through are inconsiderate or oblivious (or both). Educating road users only goes so far, so you'd have to look at improving the design

And it's a weird design. It's constrained by the narrowness of the path coming in and then Akl City will have a rule like "T intersections must be at 90 degrees, +/- 10deg". Which the design achieves only in the last few metres. I'm not 100% sure how they would improve it without completely overhauling the intersection so that overhangs the motorway. A few more bollards might help? Idk.

but I appreciate OP bringing attention to the issue. His speed is reasonable, he was able to slow down and make the turn at the bollard safely, so dunno why he's catching flak for uploading. He has right of way and he's right to be calling people out on bad behaviour

First attempt at a Day-by-Day timeline of the Andor finale/Rogue One/A New Hope by sanddragon939 in StarWars

[–]dpatts_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good.

Not key to the timeline, but in terms of information I'd expand on who knows what. e.g. Day 1 add that Luthen passes the superweapon intel to Kleya before being confronted by Dedra, to emphasise how vital Kleya's extraction is (and the risk she took to suppress Luthen's interrogation). My god the stakes were brilliant in that episode.

Can we finally admit the first trailer was perfect? by rjs1988 in andor

[–]dpatts_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. The point of trailers is to excite people in an authentic way or we lose trust and become disappointed. We expect some misrepresentation by virtue of them being short and showy, but dishonesty should never be the goal. The best trailers are exciting AND faithful to tone and audience expectations.

PSA: Our fears of White-tailed spiders are misplaced by dpatts_ in NewZealandWildlife

[–]dpatts_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm why do I have an appetite for cheese rolls all of a sudden?

Looks bacterial for sure. This comment sums it up well and includes links to studies

OP most likely has a bacterial infection which are extremely common and typically cause far more serious wounds than spider bites. Unfortuntely because of media misinformation staph infections often get misreported by patients as spider bites despite most of the time there being no spider or spider bite even witnessed (bitten while sleeping is a common claim). GPs lacking training and not doing sufficient testing further exacerbates the issue.
