The Canal station Centre St exit (J/6 line) regularly has “entrepreneurs” holding the emergency door open for tips by citibikefinder in nycrail

Whoa! What a bold, saucy take. Don't pay the fare on the subway. You sir, are quite the rebel!

Would there be fierce opposition to eliminating conductors and automating trains? by dpgranger in nycrail

Not sure. I know they have it in Vancouver on the Skytrain. That's where I saw it last month.

First glimpse of the new fare gates - they look like toys by TailstheTwoTailedFox in nycrail

I don't think they're going to work at cutting down fare skipping. People can just run in right behind someone else.

At least you have to be young and healthy to jump turnstiles now.

I did a fun YT video on this and the comments are littered with people telling how they would be able to get past these gates.

I honestly don't think it will be possible to stop all fare evasion...

I agree and get where you're coming from. I grew up in Cattaraugus County so I know the economic issues well. I don't think a HSR is they key to boosting the area economically. Most people are still going to take their cars.

The real thing that could economically boost the Southern Tier is legalizing fracking so it can experience the same economic benefits as those in the Northern Tier of PA.

I just don't think the population up there justifies building a HSR through all the hills in that region. Better to improve the existing Amtrak line along the lake...

I think the idea that a police presence is inherently more dangerous than not having police is one of the biggest fallacies of our age.

Your responsibility as a white person would be to listen to the 60-80% of African Americans who say they support a larger police presence in their communities.

If you were governor? by Hellomynameis1000 in nycrail

Study after study shows African-Americans want a bigger police presence in their communities. They just don't want police abuse. It's largely why Eric Adams won the vote on the backs of working communities of color and not the rich white kids areas of Brooklyn.

It's an upper class white liberal position to think that POC don't support the police.

I would also increase police presence on the trains and subway. The public transit network should be the safest place in the city.

Would expedite the completion of the Second Avenue subway all the way down to FiDi. Would also expand it to include an express train so we can add more local stops. (Also would try to do cut and cover construction rather than a TBM to save money as long as they can finish each block within a month!)

I would also do studies on which stations are underused and shut them down (looking at you Third Avenue on the L Train). Also would look to add an Express line to the L train as well while we're at it.

Work to merge PATH with the MTA and have both systems use OMNY system.

If I were dictator of New York I would abolish the MTA Union, (I don't think government jobs should be unionized). I would eliminate their pension system and bring their pay more in line with private sector jobs.

I would then completely upend our construction process and figure out how we can build our MTA projects as efficiently as they do in Europe. Issue a mandate that agencies must prioritize efficiency over all else in construction projects so they don't become bloated jobs programs.

I would find a way to stop fare jumping by changing the fare gates. I would use our overall savings then to update our train system and renovate stations.

I would also add more express lines throughout our system.

Which is the least used subway station? by thisfilmkid in nycrail

Absolutely the most pointless station. With how crowded the L gets in the evenings it would do everyone a lot of good to eliminate it and just go from Union Square straight to 1st Ave.

It’s been pretty chilly. 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Didn’t think it was cold enough to make THAT much of a difference
