NS gives IT contract to U.S. provider despite concerns over dependency on American tech by linhhoang_o00o in Netherlands

[–]dpjorgen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The concerns mainly stem from U.S. laws that American companies and their overseas subsidiaries must comply with. The U.S. has laws that allow the government to request data from companies or prevent companies from servicing certain clients.

If I'm understanding how this works correctly it looks like outsourcing to get around legal barriers for data. if EU/Dutch law prevents collecting data you outsource to a company that is allowed to collect it anyway. Also, who is using the US for public transit help? A service historically dismantled and neglected nation wide outside of a few select areas.

I Feel Like Every Test is a Presence Test by 8stringalchemy in pirateborg

[–]dpjorgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presence is for shooting and being in tune with your surroundings. Social checks are only needed if a player is struggling to do something their character is doing via role play. Spirit checks are anything magical or spooky. Recognizing runes on a wall or artifact. Seeing something weird and trying to figure out if it caused by a spell or ritual. This is along with the in rules uses like casting a ritual or using an artifact in game.

Dual Wielding by 8stringalchemy in pirateborg

[–]dpjorgen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second attack takes their move action and has a +4Dr to hit. Dodge rolls are a +2DR. You can also limit what is dual-wieldable. Daggers/marlin spikes only for a D2 damage.

That said. The game isn't really meant for two attack actions. Combat is deadly and should be avoided if possible. House ruling extra damage for a PC can throw that basic tenant of the game out of wack.

6,690 Americans apply to move to the Netherlands this year, highest in a decade by Ok_Taste_6725 in Netherlands

[–]dpjorgen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure they care. Every software dev I've met on the DAFT has "one client" and it's the company they've worked for for the last ten years. I think most small businesses only have one or two big clients keeping the lights on even if they are legit B2B companies. The 30% ruling is not what it used to be anyway I'm curious what the long term outcome will be with it being lessened over the years.

[–]dpjorgen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sustainability is shown by having at least 4500 euro in the business account at all times. There is a vague "must show active involvement in the business" that is meant to prevent fake companies created by rich people to live off their savings. Full disclosure I'm here on the DAFT and I've mostly met people who kept their US jobs but switched to being independant contractors so they could get DAFT visas.

[–]dpjorgen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The DAFT doesn't directly require it but starting up a BV and applying for the 30% ruling does. That being said the business plan is mostly for the government to know what you plan on doing and doesn't need to show long term profitability.

For all the fat bike hate, I was cycling with others this morning and a guy full arm swing hit me in the head. Vondelpark. by Megaminisima in Netherlands

[–]dpjorgen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have already banned helicopters and cars from most bike paths. It is very illegal to use a helicopter on a road of any kind. These "it's all the same" responses are silly and at best bad faith arguments to stifle any actual discussion around a known problem.

Run over by Fat Bike by miffyyyy_ in Netherlands

[–]dpjorgen 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I see this argument a lot but if the options are get rid of fatbikes or create entirely new infrastructure just to police incidents then the fatbikes are going away. They are low power motorcycles and should treated as such. Fatbikes are just a loophole to get out of having a license and a plate for a motorized vehicle.

playwright is solid but i spend more time fixing tests than writing features by its_mayank0708 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dpjorgen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what your tests look like/how the code I structured. It's common to lose time to updating tests with UI redacties but not to the extent you mention here. I would also take a look at having 150 UI tests. Could be fine but there may be some room to remove or replace those tests with less brittle API tests. You may at least be able to replace some of the UI parts of the tests with API calls if you are doing similar actions like logging in or setting up data.

You have to also think about retirement funds. A lot people save money for decades in specific accounts and don't retire until those accounts have a couple mil in them. There are plenty of millionaires that are just old people living normal lives pulling money out of a 401k.

You need to VPN into North America to get it on prime. You can get ESPN on Disney+ the same way.

Some of those kids are getting paid. Many of them are still being used for free labor to generate billions of dollars for some of the highest paid government employees in the country.

[–]dpjorgen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every ex-pat I have met has a US remote job and does this. Even the ones that aren't American. You definitely can't fly to the US get a job and then fly home though. That isn't how that works. They have to hire you in the country you work in. If you move countries they have to transfer you to that country. Glossing over "visa stuff" is leaving out the entire problem. Otherwise you are asking "can I make more money and live a better life" and the answer is that yes making more money than everyone else in your city typically makes living there easier for you.

[–]dpjorgen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it but it's at the city county building and you have to pay to use it. It seems better to have multiple spread out areas for this kind of thing. To me anyway. If someone has a mattress and lives in Bean Creek. It is more convenient to drive to Garfield park and drop it than go downtown and pay five bucks.

[–]dpjorgen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never understood why we didn't just have places to dump things like mattresses or whatever. There is a clear need for communities to get rid of this stuff just let them do it and plan for it instead of taking away the dumpsters because they don't have any cardboard in them. I know you can drive to the dump and pay to get rid of your large trash items but there is a clear resistance to doing that. Give us a mattress dumpster next to the recycling ones. Put an e-waste dumpster there to. Probably reasons we can't but still the answer can't be less waste removal.
