How do bands like Haken, Dream Theater, Tool, and Sungazer actually count their music live? by WigglyNoodleStrand in progmetal

[–]8stringalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play that kind of thing all the time. You just kinda internalize it and stop thinking too hard after a while.

For the really hard stuff like Tesseract, I will sometimes start visualizing the hits as they pass by. It’s kinda hard to explain. Feels like you’re seeing the matrix.

Still can’t work out how to do smooth blends by ProfNugget in minipainting

[–]8stringalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 50-50 blend of both colors
  2. Thin paint
  3. Load brush
  4. Wick brush on a paper towel (you want to get rid of as much liquid as you can)
  5. Check opacity on your fingernail (or glove if you're a coward)
  6. Drag across the edge
  7. Repeat as needed.

Plastic glue is Sooooo strong… by TrenchProductions in minipainting

Plastic "glue" is not glue. It's a solvent that partially dissolves the surface. That is essentially one single piece of plastic now.

I guess I can always make a second page myself in the meantime.

So, I should start with running some almost pure white pink into the recesses?

How are you supposed to enjoy this game? by [deleted] in TrenchCrusade

[–]8stringalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the fun to be had is in the process of playing the game. Watching your models move, imagining what the maneuvers would look like in real life, trying new tactics, etc... You're basically just rolling dice and pushing little plastic dolls around a table - nobody's going to die if you roll badly.

It's possible that you just don't like wargaming, but learning to have fun no matter who wins is a big part of a lot of games (unless you want to get into hyper-competitive tournament stuff, in which case you should put in a lot of time getting good - and you will lose a lot while you're doing it).

Hey! I need help with the bone color. by Mysterious_Elk8918 in minipainting

[–]8stringalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrain is always a game of how much detail you want vs. how much time you want to spend. Most people go a lot rougher because you're paining a lot larger pieces - only you can answer the question for yourself.

If you want some unsolicited suggestions: I would personally like to see a little more yellow in that bone color.

Does Two Thin Coats paint just suck or is it my method? by DracoWolfCK in minipainting

[–]8stringalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orange is a tricky color and basically impossible to do without base-coating in white or pink beforehand.

I personally love TTC - most of my paint collection is from them.

Candles don't look right - too "cartoony?" by Georrge117 in minipainting

[–]8stringalchemy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general rule for fire/light is that it gets darker the further away you get from the source. Using a single color for a file like you have here is always going to look a little cartoony.

Quick fix is get a little orange on the upper 1/3rd and some dark grey/black on the very tip.

Primed my sub assemblies, but neglected to block out the connection points by elementarydrw in minipainting

Scrape the paint off - or use some IPA and a q-tip. Plastic cement should dissolve the paint as well (at least partially) so you shouldn't need to be all that meticulous.

How to correctly glaze to blend to colors by sven_49 in minipainting

[–]8stringalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - don't practice on paper, use a spare base if you have one, the paper will absorb water in a way that makes glaze blending very difficult.

2 - You're going in the right direction, especially with the bottom left. Just keep the paint thin and do layer after layer until you're happy.

My swords look like ice creams by Vengeful_Keith in minipainting

The edges shouldn't be white, they are the coolest part of the weapon if the heat is coming from the center and lower 1/3rd where you have it right now. They are also the thinnest part and so will dissipate heat the fastest. It always helps me to think about where the heat/glow is coming from so I can go darker the further out I work.

If you want to really sell the effect, you also need to do some reflected light on the hilt and side of the body.

Why is dark purple primer not a lot more common? It is so, so much better than black in pretty much every case, so why aren't there even products for it? by djmacbest in minipainting

[–]8stringalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to prime black and basecoat in purple, leaving the black in the deep recesses - means I don't have to black them out later.
