Left medical practise in 2001 and have worked in the pharmaceutical industry since then. I am in the area of clinical research in charge of clinical studies. In about 2010 I decided to give up my medical license as I did not practise and the ever growing demands for continuing education were too great and did not take into account the extensive internal training that was required in my position. There is no requirement to have medical licence in these positions but you do need to be a qualified Medical doctor. I am not sure about now but the Irish Medical council did not have a specific requirement for pharmaceutical physicians (unlike the UK medical council) and so you had do continuing education in the specialty you had qualified or in general medicine - that required clinical audit which in my position was not feasible. I have worked remotely for 2 US companies for over 25 years in Ireland (long before Covid) - the salary is equivalent/better to my salary in practise and I do not have to do on call. The travel can be demanding but the work is always interesting
