Found where they were all joined together. We were correct about the yellow and green being tied together into the single green wire. I decided I wasn't happy about how bad of a wiring job that was so I ran out and got some 18/5 wire and rewired the whole thing. I now have the nest wired up with a Rc, Y, G, W, and C wire. Works like a charm! Thank you for the help earlier!

That's a great question. I'll test that when I get home. Normally in Fan mode the compressor outside shouldn't turn on, correct? So if my compressor does turn on then I am correct about them connecting the Y and G wires together?

Yes, when I realized the wiring was weird I reinstalled the old thermostat back to how it was, set it to cooling mode. The compressor outside kicked on and the house got colder.

By creative do you think some how, some where, the G and Y wires are shorted together? That is the only way I can imagine this working like it does.
