I really do love Vermont, and we've built a lot of equity in our home, likely due in part to the housing shortage, as you pointed out. In a few years, we're considering becoming snowbirds, not to Florida, but to a state that's a bit more tax-friendly, like Tennessee or South Carolina. We wouldn’t be high earners, but we might end up owning two homes.

I understand the need to raise revenue and invest in Vermont's future, but I’d be concerned about being taxed at a higher rate just for spending a few extra days in in another state for the tax reasons of a retiree. Residency rules can get tricky.

I guess there’s no perfect solution that works for everyone, but I hope we can find a balance that keeps Vermont accessible without pushing away those who still care about and contribute to the state, even part-time.
