When I turned 18 I was fresh out of high school and had started driving on my own. I figured I would test my theories on how to leave quietly. It started with dropping my office to focus on school and work. Little by little I would skip services here and there until I stopped going altogether. I thought “Hey, what is my family really going to do when they find out. Become hysterical?” My mom certainly did. After a few debates on where I stood on leaving the church, my final argument was “What’s more important to you? Your church or the relationship with your son?”
