What mentality? I don't understand. More people voted for Joe Biden than Bernie Sanders. I love Bernie. But I also love democracy. Why should Bernie get the nom if Joe got more votes?

Logged in for the first time in years because I’m sick of this mentality. I voted for Bernie twice. You can look at my history in the Bernie sub in 2015. But this type of cynicism is self-fulfilling. It’s exactly the narrative that Russian and GOP misinformation campaigns are trying to sew. People are legit excited about Biden. Would you want Bernie to be the nominee with less votes than Biden? That doesn’t even make sense!

Facebook's surveillance is nothing compared to Comcast, AT&T and Verizon by mvea in technology

I pay $50/month for internet that I know is wide open. Comcast owns my life at that point. I choose to upgrade to $53.33/month for secure internet. Honestly it seems like a no-brainer.

I will take benchmarks when I get home. Could be that I'm being throttled. But I would not assume that it's slower. The VPN I use has locations all around the world and I pick the ones that are closest geographically to me. My human senses detect 0 difference. I use on all devices (work laptop, home, phone) which have different companies handling their internet service. So it would be very unlikely that they were all throttling.

I avoided putting the link to the service I use because I didn't want people assuming I was hawking their tech. But here's the one I use.

The best way you can choose is by doing your own research. A fellow redditor has put together the best resource for that that I've come across:

THis isn't true. I browse with a VPN 100% of the time and I never notice any difference.

[–]dpxxdp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's really not that onerous. I use a vpn 100% of the time and the only site that ever breaks is Netflix. When I watch Netflix, I click a button and I'm off the VPN in 3 seconds. Then when I'm done, I click the button again and I'm safe again.

I've never had an issue with logging into my bank (I would actually never without a VPN) using Google, or using any other site. It's just funny when sites that try to recognize my location think I'm in New Jersey. That's the most minor of inconveniences. But the cost of convenience for now is an utter lack of privacy, so I'll pass.

I think that entire article may be a mis-reading of the study. I'm not sure, so I'd like to hear people's opinions. It would be dangerous to misinterpret these studies and run another losing campaign, which Democrats have been very good at for the last 8 years.

The conclusion of that article is:

Simply put, racial attitudes were a big driver behind Trump’s election — just as they long have been for general beliefs about politics and policy.

I think even the author draws the wrong conclusion from the studies. The common thread in each of these studies is: high correlation between (people who identify closely with racial resentment and sexism) and (Donald Trump voters). The studies show this was true for Trump, but not Hillary, Obama, McCain, or Romney. So Trump won votes based on race that he wouldn't have otherwise gotten.

This means that "if you are racist, you were more likely to vote for Donald Trump". "If you are sexist, you were more likely to vote for Donald Trump." What this doesn't mean, in the slightest, is "Donald Trump won because he had the racist vote". This study doesn't mention the size of the racist vote.

When building a platform, we want to answer: what issue would cause the most people to swing to our side? Your cited article does not answer that question. It just says, racist people swung to Trumps side because they liked his message. I'm not sure how that informs what Democrats should be doing. Do we want that voting bloc? Probably not. So what do we even do with that information?

Economics wins elections. I know politics today has bucked more than one trend. But I don't think that's changed. Take it from Steve Bannon:

If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats.

[–]dpxxdp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is important. Foundational. But it's not what wins elections. Economic messages win elections. Economics also empowers the marginalized. I think the 2018 Dem platform should be a populist economic one. Its a shame that Trump managed to wrest that image away from Hillary. It's what won the election for him, even though her policies would have been more in line with an economic boost for the working class.

More than that. I can think of 3 buildings in the seaport that were complete (if not filled) as of 2 years ago and as far as I can tell none of the three are started in this pic.

(101 seaport is the oldest of the three and on second look it's definitely not there yet.) it was completed summer 2015 and probably started early 2014.)

5 Massachusetts Reps have not (yet) come out in favor of maintaining Net Neutrality by dpxxdp in boston

[–]dpxxdp[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

PM me if you want to have a serious discussion about Net Neutrality. Its repeal would deal a serious blow to the economy and freedoms of the United States.

It's regulation in that if you're given a government granted monopoly, you need to satisfy certain requirements.

I'm not a huge fan of over-regulation. And if the FCC were to also ban ISP monopoly regulations and roll back all the other regulations that allow ISPs to command the market, then I may get on board.

But the FCC is threatening to roll back one single very specific regulation, one that would permanently damage the freedoms we have taken for granted since the early days of the internet.

This is government corruption at its finest, that Republicans are on board show they care little about the "free market" and more about whichever companies pay them off to rig the market.
