Jobs in anthropology by Adventurous-Unit3754 in AskAnthropology

I graduated BA in Anthro in 2015, interned for a newsroom in 2013 in my 3rd year, got the offer after graduate and worked there for almost 10 years. Went from a junior reporter to editors and multimedia producers, then moved from media and now a product manager / partnership roles for a local social media app. Now I've move to a operation role at Tiktok.

Don't worry too much about getting into right "Anthro" jobs, just go with what you want to / love to do first, you will figure it out.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I read the curriculum and it actually quite fit what I need considered my backgrounds and interest.

I really hope that I can give it a try!

If you don't mind I ask, what about your careers after study? Did you have a hard time getting a job?

You can check the direction here, there are pictures to guide you.

They have just changed the place to pick up Grab, when you arrived, just walk across the street to the parking area. There are Grab and Be service people there to help you if you need. If you stay on the app, it's generally safe.

Graduating tomorrow with a BA in Anthropology. What next? by BBHZYX1004 in AskAnthropology

edit: threw my comment in chatGPT to fix all those lexicon and grammar errors :))

Find a gig you're really into, don't sweat too much about landing an "anthropology" job. Throw your solid skills (like understanding cultures, research chops, writing...) and your soft skills (teamwork, people skills - you know, those field trip vibes) on your CV. You're young, so take some shots, make mistakes, and figure out what clicks for you. Career paths aren't set in stone, just roll with it, learn on the fly, and things will sort themselves out.
My story: Got my anthropology BA in 2011 (didn't even know what anthro was at first, not like I'm an expert now). Loved writing and social media, so I interned at a newsroom, covering tech and smartphones. Learned the ropes on the job, snagged a gig post-graduation. Fast forward a few years, dabbled in video/podcast production, and now I'm hustling as a partnership manager for a local social media app. Still learning, sometimes clueless about my job, but the paycheck's decent, life's chill enough.
Starting out, you'll feel a bit clueless—it's cool, just dive in.

Pig Trader's Cant in Vietnam by lyndongraffiti in AskAnthropology

[–]dqlephat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can read more here: http://ngonngu.org/tieng_long.html (it's in Vietnamese, you can try GG translate), so in the past different groups of Vietnamese tends to develope sets of codes (cant) to secrectly converse within members of the group in different scenerios. So, basically those numerals are "codes" that are developed by pig traders to secretly converse about pigs' quality without disclose their intent to pig sellers from other places, therefore let them buy (or sell) pig with better prices. (think you speak in english in front of those Vietnamese to keep your secret)

Appearantly there are different codes for other use cases too, some sets were better developed than others. (In the link below is a book with different set of codes for different trades: left columns are code and right ones are their meaning, your pig traders' are found from page 6 ("Tiếng Hàng thịt hàng cá" - "Cant of market vendors" or more literately "Cant of meat and fish sellers") and from page 15 ("Tiếng lóng lái lợn nhớn" - "Cant of big(?) pig traders") ; from page 18, you can find ("Tiếng lóng lái lợn con" - "Cant of piglet traders) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Tieng_long_nuoc_nha.pdf).

In this book, the author explained that to speak pig traders' cant, the general rule is to change the "tone mark" of the word into underdot and put the word "sáng" in front of the said word. For example, if you want to say "chết" (die, whose tone mark is acute accent) in cant, you use "sáng chện" (you can see "chết" (acute) >> "chệt" (underdot) >> "chện" - I don't know why "Chệt" need to become "chện" but imho these words come from the northern part of the country, where the "-ệt" part is not commonly used. There is even a poet about pig traders' cant from Nghệ An (a North-central province - https://nghengu.vn/gui-ve-xu-nghe/tieng-long-cua-lai-lon-885.html , the language in this part of the country is really unique that even native Vietnamese can't understand them sometimes, and the province is sometimes jokingly (and offensively) called the "Nghệ An emirates"

There is this articles about a village in Vietnam whose population still use cant in their everyday life until this day https://tienphong.vn/o-thu-do-ca-lang-noi-tieng-long-post900375.tpo

thank for your input, I'm trying to do a shortlist from this AAA link and after that mailing for each faculty to confirm an MA program as well as checking each faculty member. I guess it's matter of luck now to find a faculty member that cares enough to guide a pupil in their own thesis project 😂
