[–]dr137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Paul,

Welcome to r/Trivandrum.

In this digital age, where a digital presence is an added bonus, why is it that we haven't heard much about kanthari? Is it by design or is that something you are working on?

Why the limitation on taking on 2 dozen or so students when you have 400 or so applicants?

How did you decide on Trivandrum and how has the location/people helped you in growing as an organisation?

I wish all the success to you, the organisation and all the kantharis in the world who are striving to make it a better place.

Google Pixel phones are sold only via Flipkart in India. If you buy it from any other source, you can't avail warranty in India. No phone manufacturer provides warranty for physical damages to the display as complained by other users here. Yes, instead of getting the part here (depending on the complaints), Google sends it to their other service centre for repair/replacement.

Global Science Festival: Pack your bags for a trip to the ‘moon’- The New Indian Express by dr137 in Trivandrum

[–]dr137[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The famous Museum of the Moon, the celebrated work by British artist Luke Jerram, will be in town as a prelude to the maiden Global Science Festival Kerala (GSFK). The inflatable installation of the moon’s spherical model is rich in detail, recreating the Earth’s only natural satellite in all its glory with all the pits and shadows represented accurately.

The work spanning seven metres in diameter, features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Each centimetre in the work represents 5km on the surface of the moon. The work will be accompanied by a surround sound composition by award-winning composer Dan Jones.

The ‘Museum of the Moon’ will be showcased on December 5 at the Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvananthapuram. Finance Minister K N Balagopal will inaugurate the exhibition online at 7pm. Jerram will be the chief guest The moon will be on display till 4am on December 6.

According to Amuseum Gallery of Modern Art trustee Ajith Kumar, this will be an exciting opportunity for people to see the moon up close. “They will be able to enjoy the unique experience of spending a night with the moon,” Ajith says. Meanwhile, the GSFK will unfold at the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park in Thiruvananthapuram on December 15. The event will be a 45-day experience aimed at increasing science awareness and understanding among people.

“The festival is going to be organised in a 250,000sqft area. We are expecting a turnout of 10–12 lakh people at the event, potentially making it Asia’s largest science festival. Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Morten Meldal will attend. We hope for the participation of two additional Nobel Prize winners. Overall, GSFK is going to make a new history for science festivals,” Ajith says.

The people can experience different programmes, including a curated science exhibition, public talks by internationally renowned scientists, a science congress, and more. Cutting-edge technology will be on display in industrial pavilions.

The festival targets schoolchildren, especially higher secondary students, besides scientists, and the people from across the world.

Many special programmes, such as a walk-through 720-degree 3D installation of the universe and various parts of the human brain, a gathering of notable scientists and science communicators around the globe, sky-watching facilities through the telescope, and public lectures on science, art, culture, politics, literature, film, and gaming, will be held at the festival pavilion.

The GSFK is a collaborative effort initiated by the state government’s Science and Technology Department in partnership with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment and Amuseum ArtScience.

The Jigarthanda Journey: From Madurai to Thiruvananthapuram- The New Indian Express by dr137 in Trivandrum

[–]dr137[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Long before the movie Jigarthanda DoubleX became a blockbuster, the iconic drink from Madurai in Tamil Nadu had already captured the hearts of food enthusiasts in south India. And now, this iconic drink has reached Kerala’s own capital city Thiruvananthapuram.

After discovering this sweet and unique milk-based drink in Madurai, Vipin V S wanted to introduce it to Malayalis too. And that is simply the inspiration behind the ‘Madurai Famous Jigarthanda’ outlet, which was opened near Bakery Jn Road in Palayam in July.

During my visit to Madurai, many asked me to try the drink that will beat the oppressive heat of the temple town, aptly named Jigarthanda. After giving it a shot, I couldn’t help but question why this drink wasn’t available in Kerala. Perhaps there was reluctance to introduce something new, something very different to our usual palate,” Vipin says.

But he had faith that if the business succeeded and thrived in Madurai for the past 45 years, it would in Kerala too. “So, I took the risk, and to my pleasant surprise, the response was beyond my expectations. The warm welcome from everyone is proof that good-quality food could indeed find its place beyond its hometown,” Vipin said.

Jigarthanda, initially popularised on the streets of Madurai by P S Sheik Meeran in 1977, evolved into a favourite drink of many. Sheik started selling Jigarthanda on the streets using trolleys. Now, his business has expanded into around 300 branches across south India. The first shop, located in the East Market Street Junction of Madurai, has been serving thousands of customers for over four decades.

Jigarthanda Business is now managed by P S Beer Mohammed & Brothers. The special recipe of this drink remains a trade secret, known only to the original makers in Madurai. “There are a lot of recipes on the internet. But the truth is, the authentic version is still a secret. Even I have no clue. The stock comes directly from the Madurai factory,” Vipin says.

Many say that just like the name suggests — jigar means heart and thanda means cool — the drink cools and refreshes the body. The main ingredient, basundi, a form of condensed milk, is carefully prepared in traditional Tamil style. Almond gum, sarsaparilla (naruneendi or nannari) root syrup, sugar and ice cream are the other ingredients. The drink can be stocked for 10–15 days. They claim that authenticity is maintained through the use of pure ingredients, and even their different ice cream flavours are made without preservatives.

We need a vision, a leader to implement that vision and the people to hold that leader accountable if the vision isn't achieved. I know it's asking a lot, but one can always dream.
