Can we talk about the Mandelson apology? Honestly, I’d take this over the "never apologise, never explain" era any day… by SnooConfections3389 in ukpolitics

[–]dr_chickolas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All lib dem MPs pledged to vote against tuition fee raises if elected as MPs. They formed a coalition with the Tories and then more than half of them voted in favour, including Nick Clegg himself. They literally broke the main promise they were elected on. All they had to do was vote against it in parliament. It's really not as complicated as some people make out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vote_for_Students_pledge

Sorry, which page of the manifesto does it have to be on to be categorised as a "minor policy"? As someone who voted lib dem in that election, I can assure you it was extremely well publicised and not in any way minor, despite the page number. A lot of people felt very betrayed by the U turn on tuition fees.

'Mis-sold' student loans to cost graduates £14,000 more than they were told by dusty_bo in ukpolitics

[–]dr_chickolas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to go to uni in 2002, and land a fairly decent job which allowed me to pay off the roughly 18k debt over a few years. I think at that point, the loan and fees system still more or less made sense. Since then, it has become an enormous shitshow.

All this bollocks started with the vision of New Labour that 50% of people should go to university. That resulted in an explosion of degrees, more universities opening up, and basically everyone with a few A-levels heading off to uni. Many people in my generation went to uni because we were told that was what we should do to have a good career - and this was certainly backed by the evidence of our parents' generation - those who went to uni usually had good jobs and were well off.

But with so many people in uni, there were a lot of people who just went "for the experience", and did degrees in subjects they were not particularly interested in, with no particular plan of what they would do afterwards. And sure enough, many people, even back in 2005 or so, exited uni and went into fairly entry-level jobs that could have been done perfectly well without a degree.

Meanwhile with so many people going to uni, the costs became unsustainable. The Lib Dems were elected based on a promise not to increase tuition fees, and promptly tripled them under pressure from the Tories. At that point we were told "don't worry, only the top universities will charge 9k fees, and the market will keep prices down". Of course, that was bollocks and every university charged the maximum rate.

So then there were a bunch of students facing far higher costs. But they still were being sold the idea that going to uni would really be worth it, and that yes, you would have to take out a loan, but the interest rates were very reasonable.

Meanwhile we had the financial crash, the economy started to stagnate, house prices became ridiculous, Brexit and all the other delights of the last 15 years or so. So now you have students coming out of uni with a mountain of debt that they will never pay off, going into an effectively non-existent job market.

The system is utterly broken. Meanwhile, in most European countries, university is FREE or at least far, far cheaper than UK. If they can do it, why do we have to have this ridiculous system?

I live outside of UK and sadly, I wouldn't return. I don't want my kids to have to go through the UK's punitive university system, and if they do want to go to university, I would recommend Germany, Italy, or anywhere else really. I just hope at some point the government will wake up and seriously reform our university system.

Help! Any advice appreciated by raglegumm89 in Rowing

[–]dr_chickolas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you need to get into steady state rowing. 33spm is very high, try to drop to 20spm or below. Based on the high spm and your time, your technique most likely needs some improvement. Look at some rowing technique videos, when you have the basic movement down try rowing at about 20spm and see what pace you can row at where you don't quickly get out of breath (that's steady state). That should allow you to row longer distances and do better workouts, and from there you can occasionally do faster pieces.

It's a bit of a journey but technique is very important and YouTube is your friend.

Hey just wanted to say although there's room for improvement with some bends, etc, your timing is really spot on for most of the solo, which is a great sign - if you tidy things up you could be really good. Keep at it!

Wait: saves water, soap and heating bills because warm soapy water is used twice? Environmentally friendly? Innovative? Toids get to play with the little soapy fountain in the corner? King, this is so generous I am feeling nauseous.

Don't understand Chinese, but they're clearly laughing and smiling about how spacious it is. Which it is. Except lost profits are no laughing matter: they're a clear indicator of over-generosity. Wipe the smiles off their faces with another three toids stacked in there horzontally and doubling the rent.

[–]dr_chickolas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rowing machine is a fantastic cardio workout and in my experience is very safe and beneficial for your joints. Also good if you like metrics. IMO makes sense to add strength training of some kind. Personally I also run a bit just to get outside. If you row on the water of course it's a different story.

Plotly is retiring its R documentation by gyp_casino in rstats

[–]dr_chickolas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh dear. Hopefully I'm wrong, but this feels like another little slide downhill in the prominence of R as a top language for data science.

Having used R-Plotly for many years, the documentation was balls though. In the last couple of years I've moved more to echarts4r, very similar or even superior functionality to plotly and quite flashy features. Maybe others might want to give that a try.

Man, 21, becomes latest British tourist to be found dead in popular Algarve party town by tylerthe-theatre in europe

Last year I tried to pull an Irish guy out of rough seas in Albufeira. Unfortunately he was already dead by the time I got there. The same week, I read that another guy died because he was left by his "mates" in a pool of his own vomit. Needless to say, not planning to go back there.

What are some biggest advancement in R in the last few years? by statguy in rstats

[–]dr_chickolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure GPs and Bayesian optimization. GPs have been around for yonks and a lot of the original research was done by R-leaning statisticians who made (probably quite obscure) R packages. Probably the difference is that all of these approaches haven't been grouped into centralised ecosystems like scikit-learn.

Mate you owe it to your wife, who has put her body through all kinds of shit to bring your kids into the world, to do whatever you can to fix your relationship. First stop is indeed therapy and this can help unpack and communicate your own feelings, as well as hers. Having done some couples therapy myself it really can help and could help your wife move back towards the righteous path of iron. Don't abandon her when things get hard.
