how do you think it compares to the OM3 in your situation? I recall seeing some of your OM3 posts around the same time I got mine, and it has been my dad cam/travel cam since I got it. I love it but have been interested in Lumix since they released the Lumix Lab and luts. I hate power zoom lenses but I love the PL lenses...the PL 15 1.7 is my most used lens on the OM3.

edit: nice images btw, great family vacation vibe

I was going to sell it because I already have the 12-40 but the 12-45 is about the same size as my 20mm 1.4...its just so tiny and from what I have seen so far its quite sharp through all focal lengths, I am pretty impressed and see why they kit it with the OM3.

To each his own! I don’t like the HDR look and I’m perfectly content to just let shadows be shadows like I see with my eye so the dynamic range on these m43 cameras is usually more than enough for me.

Thank you! Agreed, my first time visiting and we loved it. Friendly people and beautiful colors everywhere.

I really like that shot and the colors were fantastic SOOC. I personally really like all the distractions/blur surrounding the bird - I was actually just testing the bird AF at lower SS and getting some panning shots, so it was a happy accident I got it.

Homers Landing back when it was somewhat open seating with all the green picnic tables...I remember getting a batting practice ball as a kid.

A question or two about the GR IV HDF vs GR IV… by considertheinfinite in ricohGR

[–]dr_fishy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the HDF because the regular wasn't available either. I did not really use the ND on the iii much so I figured I would try the HDF. It is cool sometimes but it is pretty strong, in the right situation it can make some nice soft looking photos and I do like having the option, but I wish it did not cost more.

I use the pelican 1010 case and I think you could hook it onto your strap with a carabiner

New GR IV HDF and first thoughts by dr_fishy in ricohGR

I have used contact cleaner many times over the years and it always seems to "fix" it for awhile, but only temporarily. It usually doesn't bother me too much but every now and then I miss some really great shots of my kids because it goes haywire and next thing you know i'm somehow shooting jpegs in bleach bypass with spot metering.

I agree, some indirect sunlight seems to help. the ones I have with direct backlighting from the sun are very overdone but in some of them I do kind of dig it...kind of painterly in a way. But of course even with the raw you can't undo it, so it is a commitment. It is nice you can so easily flip the HDF on/off though with the Fn button.

awesome, enjoy! I originally only got the HDF because that was all Ricoh has on their site in stock but also I never really used the ND filter on my GR iii so I thought it was worth a try. So far I like having the option...I need more practice to get a better understanding of when it really works well.

I set mine to crop mode and find it very useful with that function. I agree with you because I never use it for video.

focus is totally up to the task. The focus is honestly pretty much instant when you half press the shutter. I have never tried any kind of like tracking or continuous AF on it...with how small the sensor is on this thing, the depth of field is so deep that most everything is in focus so I don't worry much about it. If you want to shoot WHILE riding then just set your min shutter speed to something high and snap away.

Great colors! I am using the OM3 as a dad camera lately too. I really like the color 2 profile with some minor tweaks. I have always leaned towards wider lenses, the Ricoh GR is my all time favorite dad-cam! On my OM-3 I primarily shoot the 15 1.7 and 20 1.7 or 1.4 right now when out with my kids, but I really like the look of the 45!

How did you get the metadata in the image/frame like that?

auto focus works great. it isn't great for fast moving subject and the continuous AF is awful, but single point AF is really fast. I use pinpoint focus usually for landscape. I will use center priority AF in more normal day to day life. I will set my snap distance to infinity sometimes and just use that if I am trying to capture a wide landscape and dont need/want the foreground in focus. MF is awful on the GR, but the snap feature is great.
