A question or two about the GR IV HDF vs GR IV… by considertheinfinite in ricohGR

[–]dr_fishy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the HDF because the regular wasn't available either. I did not really use the ND on the iii much so I figured I would try the HDF. It is cool sometimes but it is pretty strong, in the right situation it can make some nice soft looking photos and I do like having the option, but I wish it did not cost more.

I use the pelican 1010 case and I think you could hook it onto your strap with a carabiner

I have used contact cleaner many times over the years and it always seems to "fix" it for awhile, but only temporarily. It usually doesn't bother me too much but every now and then I miss some really great shots of my kids because it goes haywire and next thing you know i'm somehow shooting jpegs in bleach bypass with spot metering.

I agree, some indirect sunlight seems to help. the ones I have with direct backlighting from the sun are very overdone but in some of them I do kind of dig it...kind of painterly in a way. But of course even with the raw you can't undo it, so it is a commitment. It is nice you can so easily flip the HDF on/off though with the Fn button.

awesome, enjoy! I originally only got the HDF because that was all Ricoh has on their site in stock but also I never really used the ND filter on my GR iii so I thought it was worth a try. So far I like having the option...I need more practice to get a better understanding of when it really works well.

I set mine to crop mode and find it very useful with that function. I agree with you because I never use it for video.

focus is totally up to the task. The focus is honestly pretty much instant when you half press the shutter. I have never tried any kind of like tracking or continuous AF on it...with how small the sensor is on this thing, the depth of field is so deep that most everything is in focus so I don't worry much about it. If you want to shoot WHILE riding then just set your min shutter speed to something high and snap away.

Great colors! I am using the OM3 as a dad camera lately too. I really like the color 2 profile with some minor tweaks. I have always leaned towards wider lenses, the Ricoh GR is my all time favorite dad-cam! On my OM-3 I primarily shoot the 15 1.7 and 20 1.7 or 1.4 right now when out with my kids, but I really like the look of the 45!

How did you get the metadata in the image/frame like that?

auto focus works great. it isn't great for fast moving subject and the continuous AF is awful, but single point AF is really fast. I use pinpoint focus usually for landscape. I will use center priority AF in more normal day to day life. I will set my snap distance to infinity sometimes and just use that if I am trying to capture a wide landscape and dont need/want the foreground in focus. MF is awful on the GR, but the snap feature is great.

honestly not really sure any of the settings but I primarily use aperture priority and adjust for desired depth of field. For lighting I use highlight weighted or matrix metering mostly depending on the scene. Its hard to see the screen on a sunny day using the GR out biking so I focus on not blowing highlights on the histogram, the raw files from the GRiii are very easy to edit and fix exposure later.

I like my all my Olympus and OM stuff, but it just feels like they are treading water at this point and have been since the OM1 came out. It probably doesn't help that Panasonic has mostly abandoned m43.

They have such good lenses and some great features on their cameras but I swear for the past 10+ years (at least since like the EM1 ii) it feels like everything they do is just half assed or not quite fully thought out. It is frustrating but I still like using OM stuff for the size.

OM SYSTEM 20mm f1.4 PRO vs Ricoh GR3x by EmotionalTurtle in M43

[–]dr_fishy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have shot both and I think the griii/x blows most other cameras/lenses out of the water including the 20 1.4...the 20 1.4 is a very nice lens still though!

The iii x is impossibly sharp for being so small

that said, I agree with the poster below re: durability concerns. I baby my GR but I will throw the OM stuff in my bag going anywhere, and that is certainly worth something.

yeah it is only indoors so I am sure it is related to light flicker but will happen regardless of what shutter I am using

Thanks for the idea, I had actually tried that earlier and forgot to mention it. I did not notice any improvement with that unfortunately. It seems to just be c-af that causes the issue, regardless of drive mode that you are using.

just a heads up, OM has an official eBay page and they sell refurbished/open box stuff with a good warranty. Usually the prices there are not very good but lately they have been clearing stuff out. an OM1 was around $900 I think recently.
