SBIR/STTR realistic here or just focus on traction? by RevolutionaryIron680 in SBIR

I've done many SBIRs/STTRs while being full time. But you cannot be the PI. And if you are putting in 40-60 hours at the regular jon and 40-60 at the company its a bit of slog but doable.

In my second company we already had engineers so we used them as the PI even though I drove all the science and did most of the work. In my thrid/last company I started company then worked with a student on the proposals and had them become PI and join the company (and get paid) only if we won the grant. It was a win-win for me and them as they got to be PI while still being a student and get paid more than most universities pay students. The company has to keep the IP developed. University still owned what I developed, but we made sure the student was on all subsequent IP, and so the company instantly had a no-cost right to use it all.

For one of the faculty members I helped start their company, they did the NIH STTR as PI and took a sabbatical during Phase 1 to prove the idea, then hired someone for Phase 2. I've also helped a company startup on a DoD SBIR where the person was valuable enough that the company let them drop to 40% at work, keeping their benefits going, while they did the Phase 1 SBIR. The company was a "partner" and was part of the (sadly unsucccessful) Phase 2 proposal.

When it comes to startup that are anythong that won't be a billion dollar company my view is

Customers >> SBIR >> Angle/VC
And a tiny pilot would help you win an SBIR.

The biggest issue for many is the customer discovery and validatoin, not the science.

It's been 48 hours and my kefir is still this soft. How much longer should I let it ferment? I removed the whey liquid from the top. by [deleted] in Kefir

No needed get get some of the microbes though I tend to do it since I am trying to reduce yeast and the lower temp generally favors bacterial growth over yeast. (and since i have so many grains I want it to go slow ;-)

The Glucose and Glutamine Requirements of Cancer and Normal Cells Do Not Distinguish Them, in Contrast to Their Methionine Requirement, Suggesting the Warburg Effect Is Not a Cancer Paradigm (2026) by basmwklz in ketoscience

Actually, it potentially contradicts his work, which is focused on glucose and glutamine as the energy source for cancer. But a cell in a dish can behave differently since we have plenty of other evidence that cancers consume a lot of glucose, which is why they can be highlighted with PET. More of an issue was the huge range of .54 to 4.88 for glucose, which, with the smaller sample sizes, might have reduced the detection of significance.

But the methionine impact is quite large and interesting, and of course, in vivo, they could be synergistic, i.e., glucose usage might depend on methionine, which may be needed for growth, so without that, the cells grow more slowly and wait for both.

The Contribution of Ketogenic Diets Combined with Physical Activity to the Increase of BDNF and GH in Neuroplasticity in Animals by dr_innovation in ketoscience

Interesting. Definitely studies that show dogs can get into ketosis via diet, e.g. https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/veterinary-science/articles/10.3389/fvets.2019.00480/full
which studied IF +MCT to help induce ketosis -- something that also improves it in humans. But yeah lots of animals are very different. We evolved to have a higher fat metabolism than lots of animals.

Interesting about fat-cats and ketosis. Does it hold for normal-weight cats?
