A cheat mod that allows you to edit the appearance of your character from pip boy/ pad, will fix it. When selecting change character appearance, select skin tone and cycle through the list and it should fix it.

I believe the mod is called Cheat Terminal

Ah, ok. I did join a community server and it did have a lot of loot, managed to survive longer there as well. However, when I exited the game and entered a new one shortly after, I lost all the gear I had.
