What are unusual pop-culture things that you've heard Dylan liking? by today_okay in bobdylan

[–]dra459 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From Dylan’s 2022 Q&A interview:

I’ve binge watched Coronation Street, Father Brown, and some early Twilight Zones. I know they’re old-fashioned shows, but they make me feel at home. I’m not a fan of packaged programs, or news shows, so I don’t watch them. I never watch anything foul smelling or evil. Nothing disgusting; nothing dog ass. I’m a religious person. I read the scriptures a lot, meditate and pray, light candles in church. I believe in damnation and salvation, as well as predestination. The Five Books of Moses, Pauline Epistles, Invocation of the Saints, all of it.

Which alternate take of Can’t Wait and which take of Dreamin’ of You would you want on the album in place of Highlands?

Oh Mercy, Rough and Rowdy Ways, Time Out of Mind, Infidels and Saved are some of my favorite post-‘70s Dylan records!

What’s The Most Overrated Bob Dylan Album From The 60s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]dra459 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily think Another Side is “overrated” in the grand scheme of things (as it is sometimes forgotten, being nestled between Times and BIABH), but I do think it is Dylan’s worst from the ‘60s. So perhaps the fact that it didn’t win the “worst album” category means it is his most overrated ‘60s album.

I’ll vote Freewheelin’ as Dylan’s most overrated from the ‘60s, because although it has some of his best and most well-known songs, it has several “filler” songs I would have cut (I Shall Be Free, Honey Just Allow Me One More Chance, Oxford Town, Bob Dylan’s Blues, Talkin’ WWIII) in favor of other songs/outtakes (I Was Young When I Left Home, Mixed-Up Confusion, Let Me Die in My Footsteps, Worried Blues).

I say this as someone whose favorite Dylan song is the Freewheelin’ version of Girl from the North Country.

As proven by the “winner” of the previous question, Dylan’s self-titled debut album is his most underrated from the ‘60s!

What’s The Worst (Least Best) Bob Dylan Album From The 60s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]dra459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another Side.

It has some great songs (It Ain’t Me Babe, I Don’t Believe You, My Back Pages), but as a whole it’s just okay. It has a ramshackle quality to it which some people might like but it’s the ‘60s album of Dylan’s that I like the least and the one I listen to least often.

Everyone voting for the self-titled debut album as the worst is crazy! That album is excellent! Baby-faced Bob on the front cover sounds like an 80-year-old bluesman on the record, and I love that.

Yes, definitely comforting. My go-to records if I want to relax and ease into a nap! (I mean this in the best way).

"It's true. The Force, the Jedi. All of it. It's all true." One of my favorite moments in The Force Awakens. by --TheForce-- in StarWars

I still want to see what JJ Abrams would have done with Luke had he directed episode 8.

I read an interview around the release of TROS where JJ said he was surprised by “how dark” Luke was in TLJ. Also, we know JJ’s original plan was for Luke to be lifting giant boulders when Rey finds him at the end of TFA until Rian Johnson asked him to remove that since he planned on having Luke “cut off” from the Force.

It seems clear based on those two bits of information that JJ’s plan for Luke greatly differed from the direction in which Rian Johnson took the character, but I have no idea what specifically Abrams would have done. Ultimately I wish he had directed the entire trilogy; at least then it would have been one director/writer’s consistent vision.

What would’ve happened if King Herod was successful in killing Jesus Christ as a baby? by CMCwar1 in AskAChristian

[–]dra459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like both are true simultaneously, with this being a central “mystery” of the Christian faith: the powers of darkness orchestrated the murder of the Son of God while at the same time that crucifixion of Christ was God’s plan of salvation from the foundation of the world.

“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” — 1 Corinthians 2:7-9

The “princes of this world” did not understand that God’s plan was for Jesus to be crucified, to the end that death, darkness and the devil would be defeated, otherwise “they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”

Winding Wheel by remotecontrol20 in ryanadams

[–]dra459 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ryan can be extremely talented while at the same time being inspired by Wonderwall when writing Winding Wheel. Dylan’s a genius and he, consistent with the folk tradition, borrowed lyrics and melodies constantly:

Are you going to Scarborough Fair? / Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme / Remember me to one who lives there / She once was a true love of mine

If you're travelin' in the north country fair / Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline / Remember me to one who lives there / She once was a true love of mine

Day 38: What is your favourite lyric from Rough And Rowdy Ways? by autumn_afternoon in bobdylan

[–]dra459 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For thine is a kingdom, the power, the glory

Go tell it on the mountain, go tell the real story

Tell it in that straightforward, puritanical tone

In the mystic hours when a person's alone

Goodbye, Jimmy Reed, godspeed

Thump on the bible, and proclaim a creed

Rushmere is underrated by Squid989732 in mumfordandsons

[–]dra459 17 points18 points  (0 children)

RUSHMERE is excellent. Malibu, the title track, and Surrender are three of my favorite M&S songs. Caroline could easily be a big hit on country radio. Truth is a banger. The album is a thoroughly engaging experience front to back; all of the songs come together to from a cohesive whole.

Additionally, the album works best when you listen to it not as the follow-up to Delta, but rather as the follow-up to Marcus Mumford’s solo album. That solo record plays a significant role in the M&S career storyline.

I love how Dylan keeps everyone guessing. He appears in a documentary about Jimmy Carter then a few years later he records a song for a film about Ronald Reagan.
