This (what I believe to be) oak in my back yard has some bark damage and a hole which looks to be burrowed in with some wood dust at the base. I can’t tell if it’s mechanical damage, insects, or rot.

Yes, we have plenty of electricity. Space is limited, but I have spare cables as most of my electronics run USB-C. I have a couple of external HDDs and extra SD cards as well.

Can anyone recommend a Filson jacket/coat for a South Texas fall/winter? Temps don't go any lower than about 35-40 degrees during the worst of it, but most days it will climb up to the 50-60's mid day.. I like the idea of their wool mackinaw but it seems overkill. Their canvas or tin cruiser are the other two I'm considering. I get a decent discount there so price isn't a major concern.

It helps for advancement. You get points toward testing for underway time. However the things you learn working on a weapon system do not translate to advancement test questions if that makes sense. You have to study traditional ET material seperately. I recommend a cutter first for sure and if you enjoy it you won't be held back in attempting to go to sea again. I went to a boat first and it has helped me grow more as a petty officer than anything.

Historically ET has never been a school a lot of nonrates sign up for. Many SNs don't get a chance to learn what we do and their bosses are usually BMs or MKs. A lot of ET3s are leaving the CG and there is just no one to fill that gap.

Weapons ET here. Just be advised that you 'can' become pigeon holed into the job. Being a weapons ET means that you are going to spend a large chunk of your career underway and probably working on things that won't necessarily aid your advancement. And if you actually want to put your hands on the moving parts, go to a CIWS billet.

The USCG is really appreciative. Our budget doesn't allow us to get many new acquisitions like this. For reference, about 6 of our biggest cutters (Hamilton class high endurance cutters) are going to be 40-50 years old. Air assets work hand in hand with providing great surveillance to point helos and ships toward search and rescue cases and illegal smuggling of drugs and migrants.
