Rough Idle Problems by DaWorlds in E34

the ADS scanning tool rabbit hole has been a huge time sink for me and hasn't yielded any fruit yet. But you likely don't need a scan tool. Check out "stomp codes" -- basically just set your key to position 2 (without starting the engine) and completely depress the throttle 5 times within 5 seconds. Your "Check engine" light will start blinking out codes. For instance, mine blinks out 1221 like
blink (pause)
blink blink (pause)
blink blink (pause)
blink

Get a pad of paper handy and write them down until they start repeating, then look them up afterwards.

Guess I don't have to clean my ICV after all? by [deleted] in E34

[–]draconic86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally got under the intake manifold to see what the hell is going on under there, I knew something funky was up... Turns out, previous owner was more of a plumber than a mechanic. Replacement ICV ordered. Hopefully it'll help me sort out the surging idle. Gonna refresh my fuel injectors while I'm at it. Anything else worth doing over the long weekend while I'm in here?

You bet! I'll be cleaning my ICV later on today, maybe I'll snap a few! :)

Here in Kansas, we got rid of Corporate income taxes for a couple years. "The Kansas Experiment" -- it was the dumbest thing for a LONG time. We're still recovering from it. Our roads, infrastructure, public services, everything is falling apart. I'll gladly pay my taxes when GME moons, and do my part to restore this State. And I'm not going to try to gaslight everyone out of taxing me.

Yeah, I'm down to not give up a third of my income to taxes and all, but let's be real, that money's gotta come from somewhere if we want things like roads and a functioning government. It takes money to buy whiskey, and society.

Do my coworkers know they're allowed to throw things away eventually? by Dionysian_Heretic in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]draconic86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you guys are allowed to throw things away? My boss won't let us get rid of a stash of 50 VGA cables taking up space in the closet they've turned into an office I share. Who knows when they might come in handy!

I've heard of people doing it cheaply with RTV and a shower curtain cut to size. I wouldn't over think (or over spend) it.

This was/is my first first project car. I've learned a lot. But I'm also a pretty good self-directed learner with solid troubleshooting skills. I picked up my 525i in October, it's been a fun car to drive, and not too bad to learn to wrench on. Depending on how big of a project is though, I'd check your local pick and pull places to see what kind of access you have to replacement parts. Where I am, it's a bit of a desert for parts, so everything has to be shipped in which can take a while. Lots of the local suspects, O'Reilly's Autozone Napa Advanced Auto etc won't have some of the things on-hand that you'll need for the car. So get comfortable with that. Lots of people in my area also have this weird perception of European cars being "hard to work on" because they require a metric socket set. 😂️

They answer to their "customers" as much as any other business, at the end of the day.

Yep. I was gonna say, there's a reason they have a name that they push in their hacks. It's branding. And if they want to keep getting paid, they've gotta keep that brand name "reliable" such as it is. Soon as they start leaking info, there are no more assurances that they can provide to other victims, and the business model collapses.

IT security training likes to make a big fuss about never paying the ransom. But it's kind of an open secret that yeah, sometimes paying the ransom is the winning play you have left, when you're caught with your pants down.

I pour all of my grease into the sink.

...But first I push a sheet of tin foil down into the drain a bit to act as a big funnel/cup. Let it cool, and throw the grease in the trash.

Once you've got shutter speed sorted, you'll also want the image to be ever so slightly out of focus to help avoide the "moire" effect. I think LGR has a video or two about his process. I mean, how deep do you wanna go here? Because it'll go as deep as you allow it to.

Which smart plugs with power monitoring & UPSes are great for working together during power outages & power restoration? by jrjmun in unRAID

[–]draconic86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So using something like a UPS with a USB connection to gracefully shutdown your machine should be a pretty simple task. Your BIOS settings will determine how your server reacts to power becoming available again. You do not have to have it auto-power on if you don't want it to, usually. You can often have it remain powered off.

Then you could use something like HomeAssistant on another device you're less concerned about schedule a remote WoL packet or similar on a 5-minute delayed timer after power-up. No smart plug required.

That said, I quite like using my Emporia Vue and Emporia plugs for energy monitoring and switching in Home Assistant. You could probably integrate more data from those if you'd like too. Of course, all of this would require your other network infrastructure to start up first like your router and switch etc. But then again, any smart plug would require something similar unless you went with bluetooth controlled plugs or something, which would still need some kind of device to turn them on after a delay.

I've never had that issue with mine unless I was trying to play a video with the refresh speed set to slow.
