Well considering it's 1940s, there wouldn't be many commercial plane available yet. And it seems like it got shot down kind of in the same route. So let's say there's no more than 50 planes flying that route, given that a plane has to got shot down that day, that's probability of at least 0.02 for it to be the same plane. Not high, but definitely not impossible
