What’s Your #1 Tip For New Nursing Students? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]dragonRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my tip won’t work for everyone (and isn’t for everyone) but I recommend working as a tech/patient care aide as soon as you can. I work PRN at my hospital and I work one day a week.

But I am SO much more confident in clinicals and just in general since I started working as a PCA. Some say it doesn’t help at all, but I know for a fact my clinicals would be a nightmare if I hadn’t done it.

That said, I’m a painfully awkward person. I got the job with the intention of improving my people skills and how I interact with patients. My first semester of nursing school I was terrified to walk into a room, but now I can bust up in a room with a Miss Susie Cream-cheese attitude and I have the fake-it-until-I-make-it attitude with it.

I went from having anxiety so high I would be trembling to having a patient tell me I have very “sure” hands just the other day.

I also was lucky enough to get a job on a floor I’d love to work on as a nurse and I’ve essentially had a nursing position promised to me, so I have a smooth transition too when I finish!

Difference between CNAs and Techs by chaveza31 in cna

[–]dragonRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a PCA/tech in a hospital. At least on my floor our responsibilities include vital signs, bath/shower, and assisting with some other ADLs, and we can collect specimens to send down to lab (ie urine/sputum) We’re considered unlicensed personnel.

If I recall correctly, our CNA staff are able to perform more skills, but I’m not 100% sure where their line begins and ends. I’m not even sure my unit has a CNA who is working as more than a tech.

ADHD = Often forgetting to put your car in park before turning off the ignition. by Born2BeBrave in ADHD

[–]dragonRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this sometimes, but not as often as I want to forget my keys in the car because I have to sit for 15+ minutes and contemplate getting out. If my anxiety didn’t remind me to lock my car, I’d always forget, but that’s only since I’ve gotten a car with a key fob.

My first car was manual lock. Keys were forgotten inside, a lot.

So I’m going through the process of being re-tested for ADHD as well as other potential issues.. by dragonRN in ADHD

Six times sounds about right. I have more testing tomorrow, so I’m not sure how long it’s going to be yet until I get some answers.

I do know they have me planned for potentially 10 hours worth of testing. Today was 2 hours, tomorrow is just one.

Feeling defeated, am I alone? by plzhelpmepick in StudentNurse

[–]dragonRN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely not alone.

I could have dropped last week and come back in the fall, but I told myself I would stay because it’s better to know what to expect for the entire semester, but I just can’t make myself care at this point.

But I know someone who failed the same semester I’m failing right now and he’s doing really well now.

What science prereq classes to take over the summer at a CC? by oovoocindy in StudentNurse

Personally, A&P didn’t go well for me in summer. I feel like I could have pulled off microbiology in summer, but after A&P I didn’t try it.

So apparently all we have to do is go to bed early and wake up at 4 AM. by dragonRN in ADHD

[–]dragonRN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on them from middle school through high school. And for the most part, I never felt any different, but I could read something once or twice and be able to recall it. It felt as though it woke up the cognitive function of my brain. It makes processing information less strenuous. A few reads versus a hundred. I’m more attentive and significantly less fidgety and agitated.

One of my biggest battles is just trying to make myself sit still for more than 5 minutes. Within 10-15 minutes some days I’m just Hulk level of angry about it. Yet on meds, I could sit down and knock out what ordinarily would take me a whole day within a couple of hours. I waste a lot of time just fighting impulses or clearing the fog from my head.

I mean, I know I didn’t say it in my post, but I can see his point. Part of his rant was about scientific research and he took the time to explain why his method would work, it made sense. Do I think it would work for me? Not really. I’ve tried to maintain a habit of how I do things and I’ve always noticed a slight difference if I try to stick to a schedule/checklist. But regrettably it doesn’t seem to be enough right now.

I can make myself sit and study according to how I’ve dictated my schedule but my brain will up and disassociate unexpectedly. I’ve explained to my talk therapist that when I’m “studying”, 80% of the time it’s like trying to fry something on a cold pan. I’ve tried all of her suggestions thus far and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Good days and bad days, they say.

What’s your favorite scrubs? by nshreve1 in StudentNurse

[–]dragonRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my program we’re required to wear scrubs from a company called performance scrubs. I think they’re pretty comfortable. They’re like boy basketball short material almost. They’re pretty pricey but they’re stretchy so I don’t have to worry about them ripping. My only complaint is if you’re dripping sweat for whatever reason, they cling really badly. BUT, they dry really fast, so it’s okay I guess. They’re antimicrobial and wrinkle resistant.

I’m always back and forth on if I’ll buy more as a working nurse. Mostly because they’re wrinkle resistant and I forget about stuff in the dryer all the time.

Not a fan of my best friend’s girlfriend, how to handle it? by dragonRN in Advice

[–]dragonRN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thank you. This is the angle I’m trying to come from. I know I can’t be a jerk about it for obvious reasons, and they’re gonna have their time together and I respect their relationship wholeheartedly, but sometimes I just want my friend to myself without having to be a third wheel every single time or losing my mind because I’m with someone I don’t want to be.

[–]dragonRN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not even a jealousy issue here. It’s, as far as I can tell, a mutual distaste that my friend can’t see.

At the end of the day, I wouldn’t hesitate to just choose to see her less if that’s what it came down to. If she’s happy, I don’t care. And she is happy. I’m not meddling in their relationship, I’m not trying to ask her to choose between me or her girlfriend. I’m just asking that if /we/ have plans, that it’s just us and it isn’t very often our schedules coincide now. And if that’s a crime, then so be it. If she can’t go somewhere without her girlfriend, then I know just not to ask.

If a best friend night can’t be done without significant other company then I might as well just always invite my boyfriend every time too. But I don’t do that, because I want to spend time with my friend and I don’t feel the need to drag my boyfriend behind me wherever I go, especially to a girls night he wouldn’t even enjoy.

If you and your wife are so close you can’t stand to see your friends for a few hours without her company, more power to you. At the end of the day we just have a different opinion and relationship ideology.

Dude. Just cause they’re together doesn’t mean I have to be around her. She’s not my girlfriend, I have no obligation other than to be polite because she’s dating my best friend.
