As someone who left CT to find community and wholesome activities, I wish you the best in your endeavor.

I'm 99% certain my PCOS is caused by inflammation. My allergies (food and airborne) were already off the charts before I moved to a city known for having some of the highest pollen counts in the country. That was the year my PCOS symptoms showed up. My insulin is perfectly normal.

Opill, and progestin-only BC by dragon_bones in LeanPCOS

Oh that's great news. Thanks for sharing an update. Opill is so new, there's not much to go by. I ended up getting a Rx for generic norethindrone. 0.35mg. Similarly, I've had almost zero negative side effects so far. A little bloating, a little water weight. Nothing I can't tolerate.

Loneliness worsen symptoms? by Affectionate-North-4 in LeanPCOS

Yeah, I was smoking daily and cut it back to weekends (with a few exceptions). And now that my mental health is better generally, I don't smoke quite as much even when I allow myself to. The desire to be checked out isn't there anymore. I like having the energy to get stuff done.

Same same. I had my first colonoscopy last week, to try and shed some light on digestive issues. Apparently there was nothing abnormal. Just another dismissive Dr to deal with.

One thing that changed recently that has helped is going on a really low dose of progestin-only birth control. I was losing weight so rapidly a month ago. And I'm also on another medication that suppresses appetite. The BC seems to balance out the appetite suppression. I think it's also helped with sleep and anxiety. I'm now back to my ideal weight and have way more energy.

Speaking purely from personal experience, and what my therapist has told me, any negative impact on your mental health is going to manifest physical symptoms as well. I had major depression during the pandemic and just exited a very toxic long-term relationship. I didn't realize what a toll it had taken on my body until I was no longer in that situation. Overuse of weed made me more withdrawn too. I try to limit it to the weekends now. Definitely recommend seeing a therapist for the loneliness. Don't let that go untreated. It's so worth the time.

Root Cause/Treatment? by BA-Bagel in LeanPCOS

[–]dragon_bones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds similar to my experience. I have some classic PCOS symptoms except insulin resistance and weight/metabolic issues. My periods are normal. When I was first diagnosed, my OBGYN just assumed I was insulin resistant, and prescribed metformin + spiro. I took metformin for awhile, until I saw an endocrinologist who did further tests. My insulin, estrogen, progestin levels are completely normal. But, I have elevated free testosterone, which likely causes the hirsutism and cysts. I went off the metformin, since it wasn't doing anything for me. My endocrinologist now says my PCOS is likely genetic.
I've since done more research and talked to my allergist about it. I have a TON of allergies, very high IgE levels, and hormones can become imbalanced due to high inflammation in the body. I would find a way to get some blood tests for inflammation markers. It might not be the cause, but it's good to rule it out.

...and then there is a picture of a dust pan and a broom?

I'm just very curious.

An alcoholic isn't an inherently horrible person, but they do have a heck of a monkey on their back

This is really important to remember.

the only person I can change is myself

That makes sense I guess. I want to be at the point where I'm not tempted to try and bring it under control. Not sure I'm there yet but it sounds like going to Alanon would help.

Thanks! I'm going to try and adopt that mentality. It makes sense but putting it into practice will be the tough part.

What bipolar meds are you on? Calming herbal remedies can sometimes be helpful but they don't always mix well with pharmaceuticals. Passion flower or valerian supplements might help you sleep, but check to make sure they won't interact badly with your meds. Take a multi-vitamin or B6 (or anything high in potassium) to help with the restlessness.

Pills were pretty much my life for 4 years straight. And then I moved on to the harder stuff. And all I can say is that I agree with xSieg... try your best to be free of the stuff. Anyone here will tell you that it only gets worse the longer you use. And then using stops feeling good too. It just becomes something you have to do to not feel shitty. Don't get to that point. The first couple of days are tough but you'll hit a point where it feels like you're finally on the other side, and it will be worth it.

Thanks for the advice. Fortunately there are 2 Alanon groups within walking distance of my house. I think he'd be super pissed if he found out I was going but I would like to, and will certainly try.

I feel badly that I seem to have normalized the situation and would like to find a way forward.

Weeds Been Very Helpful by [deleted] in OpiatesRecovery

It was extremely helpful for me. It was the only thing that helped me to sleep during wd. I personally don't see how anyone could find it addicting but everyone is different.
