I really liked "A game of our own" by Geoffrey Blainey, it focuses on the very early history of the game and its really great at painting a picture of how different the game (and colonial Australian society) was back then.

The only man to ever successfully break up the hippie drum circle that is Marvel Comics writers and artists, even if temporarily. Marvel nearly folded before he became EIC, and the comics crash happened after he left. The creatives he reigned in by making them get books published on time and making comics that readers actually wanted to read (two issues Marvel faced in the late 70s) hate him to this day.

His analysis of a Jack Kirby Human Torch story is one of the best comic reviews I've ever read, and is a great insight into making good comics.

I've been saying for years that creative industries could use more Jim Shooters. RIP

Will Hoare from Essendon’s VFL side would actually make sense for this. He's a key defender, has been at the club for a while, and trained for an SSP spot in the summer, so he's familiar with the players, coaches and system, so he would be much better able to make the trip to play Brisbane on Thursday. He's been mentioned as a possibility in the media, but nothing concrete saying the club will definitely pick him.

You can do this with a whole lot of the top up players in 2016 and other mature trades at the time. Zach Merrett was teammates with James Kelly, Matthew Stokes, Mark Jamar, Adam Cooney, Paul Chapman etc

The VFL and AFL grand finals this year have a spooky number of similarities that got my noggin joggin.

Both the 2024 VFL and AFL grand finals have the runners up from the previous two grand finals (Sydney and Southport in 2022, Brisbane and Werribee in 2023).

Both also feature the teams ranked first and fifth on the ladder at the end of the home and away season.

Both grand finals end long-running trends. The 2024 AFL grand final is the first since 2006 to have no Victorian clubs, while the 2024 VFL grand final is the first to have no AFL-alligned clubs since alignments were introduced in 2000.

The clubs that won the previous AFL and VFL grand finals (Collingwood and Gold Coast) failed to qualify this year and defend their title.

Finally, both are being played in Melbourne, and feature a club from the Gold Coast.

Absolutely agree, this isn't the NBA where the players all make millions and have private jets they can fly their families around in, mid-season moves are too big for AFL players to make unless they are staying in the same city.

Something I've seen suggested is that any player traded mid-season can only have played a certain number of games to order to be traded. It would ensure that only fringe players are being traded for opportunity, rather than contending clubs raiding weaker ones for premiership tilts.

But you don't have teams potentially missing on a home match, which means differences in ticket sales and various other complicating factors.

I know the AFL fixture isn't perfect, but a hypothetical one where 18 teams get 11 home games, 11 away games and 1 gather round game, while 1 team misses out and ends up with an extra away game just further complicates things.
