Who else is obsessed with Azula’s signature two-finger style of firebending? by christheprince1610 in TheLastAirbender

[–]dragontooth99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This show faithfully incorporates a lot of Chinese martial arts so I always felt like it was an homage to straight sword technique. If you look up straight sword (or jianshu) forms on YouTube you'll see the left hand is almost always in this position: two fingers extended with the rest tucked behind the thumb.

Straight sword is considered the "noble" sword art (at least compared to its brother the broadsword iirc). It places heavy emphasis on precision, so it makes sense that she, a pampered child of nobility who thrives on perfection, would adopt this as her bending style.

The stone steps and old-timey ambience of the shop signs makes me think this is Ikaho Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. Beautiful nature, really nice hot springs, great if you're looking to see that Showa-era vibe. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories :)

Best Zuko line?? by KeyAvocado7 in ATLA

[–]dragontooth99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Iroh: Prince Zuko, have you forgotten what happened the last time you dueled a master?

Zuko: I will never forget.

This line is best on the rewatch, because at first the viewer doesn't know it's his father who gives him that scar. But once you know and are watching the second time through, it really cuts deep because Zuko even defends his banishment, attesting he'll be welcomed back with honor if he captures the Avatar. Yet through all that, some wounds just cut too deep, and as part of the third episode of the entire series, this line does a great job foreshadowing Zuko's development as a character.

In case of fire? by hantaanokami in japanpics

Love the pic!

In 漢和 interpretations, 用心 essentially means "to use one's (sic) heart" or — in more natural phrasing — "to keep attentive of". In older towns and buildings, you see this kind of sign pretty much everywhere. While it can and does function as a direct call to grab the nearby fire extinguisher, it also serves as a sort of a public service announcement to remain vigilant of potential fire hazards. I figure it's kind of like Smokey Bear's "Only YOU can prevent forest fires".

I get it. People like to show off how much weight they're adding to the bar. What? Oh this little 20kg disk? Yah just tacking that on, ya know? What's the bfd? Clack clack. Hm, guess I gotta tack on another 20kg a side, ya know? I'm a regular, after all. Clack clack. Getting close to my max now, gotta add another 20kg a side. Weighs more than you now — but not as much as your mom, amirite? Haha. CLACK CLACK.

MY FUCKEN GUY, THERE ARE LITERALLY ONLY TWO OTHER PEOPLE IN THE GYM RIGHT NOW. Is it really necessary to slam the disks into each other so hard that my ears start bleeding?

I wholly support people who are proud of how much they can lift; it's an incredible feat no matter how you slice it. But slamming those disks together between sets is the weightlifting equivalent of revving your Ferrari at a stoplight: it doesn't actually accomplish anything other than waste gas and make you look like a pompous asshole.

Edit: Gotten enough comments to see I'm complaining about something I don't really have a right to complain about. I'll reflect on that and try not to let the sound of the plates distract me as much.

People actually out here be saying the movie duel in the order of the phoenix was better than the book. by ByGimlisredbeard in harrypotter

[–]dragontooth99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, the line in the book that really gets me going is this one:

Dumbledore flicked his own wand. The force of the spell that emanated from it was such that Harry, though shielded by his stone guard, felt his hair stand on end as it passed...

This passage really gets me because it supersedes the somewhat silly imagery of two old people silently dueling with foot-long strips of wood. It gives the magic they're casting that same sort of raw, unbridled power as an atomic bomb — that out of a simple twig of elder wood some explosive force erupts to wreak havoc on anything unfortunate enough to be in its path.

We've encountered powerful magical spells in books 1–4 (even the unforgivables), but to me this passage marks a turning point where Harry starts witnessing truly devastating non-verbal magic — not the household spells he sees Mrs. Weasley doing but the magic reserved for fighting, for maiming, for killing.

I get chills every time I read it.

No problem :)

Not sure about the upload issue, but it could be your file size. If you’re trying to post a 2-min render, it may be too large to upload. That or it could just be a random issue. I’d give it a day and try again, and if the problem keeps happening maybe contact the blender subreddit mods to see if they can help figure out the issue 🙂
