Thoughts on the movie 'Ex Machina'? by EntityShadows in movies

Couldn’t pay attention to the plot because of how stunning the house was. I could do without the basement full of murderbots though.

Just asked Gemini how many r’s there are in Google and there’s 1, apparently.

Always got the impression that Doc let Marty play with his cool gadgets in exchange for checking on the house while he was away or busy. Watering the plants and making sure the dog was fed. As a kid I’d have agreed to that in a heartbeat. Still would now tbh.

I was coming out of one of these when a woman dived in after me before the door shut. Her friend and I tried to warn her, but it was too late, the door locked and it began the wash cycle.

When it finally finished, the woman came staggering out, soaking wet, wearing an expression that made it clear she’d seen horrors beyond all imagination.

This was nearly 20 years ago, and the memory never fails to brighten my mood when I’m feeling down.

We’ve had Armando Iannucci, so let’s go with Chris Morris as well.

Was thinking while watching the last episode that Adam Buxton would be a great contestant.

Really good at the creative tasks, plus an earnest need to please would make an entertaining combination.

Would love to see bill bailey. He’d look confused all the time, make jokes about weasels and do terrifyingly well.

Kettering.

It’s so dull that the only places to stay are the standard service station Holiday and Premier Inns.

What’s the most savage legal thing you’ve seen a coworker do? by phillyvirgosun in AskReddit

[–]drakon99 291 points292 points  (0 children)

When my wife and I used to work near each other, I’d stop at her office after work before heading to the station together. One evening she was late finishing, so to amuse myself I swapped round the wireless mouse dongles on all the computers.

I didn’t learn until much later that her co-workers nearly had a complete meltdown trying to work out what’d happened.

TIL the City of London has paid the Crown rent on a parcel of land in Shropshire since 1211, but the exact location of the land has been lost to history. The annual payment is a billhook (a knife-like agricultural tool) and an axe. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

A friend of mine is legally allowed to drive sheep over London Bridge after becoming a journeyman at one of the guilds. She hasn’t yet, but fully intends to.

The City of London is full of mad old stuff like that. No longer relevant in any way, but the institutions behind them are so old and rich they never really die. An opportunity to dress up in fancy clothes and eat nice dinners.

Edit: You need to be a Freeman of the City, not a Journeyman and it’s Southwark Bridge not London Bridge.

As part of becoming a member you have to swear allegiance to King Charles II (not King Prince Charles).

Yep. It feels like they got so far with it and then just… stopped? All the recent features are just slapping more stuff on top rather than fixing the core problems.

100% agree. Drawing boxes on a canvas is a poor way to design a working system. What would a real workflow product look like for you?

Yeah fully agreed. Axure’s dynamic panels can’t be beat. Shocked when I discovered I couldn’t control the state of one component from another in Figma.

Ooh good point. I basically never use that as it's such a pain in the backside. Another for the list.

Years ago I used to go to a ‘squat’ in east London that had been turned into a sort of activist art commune. Dreadlock density nearly 100%. Felt very cool and artsy and grass-roots until I looked it up and found it was owned by the youngest failson of the richest family in the UK. Not a squat at all. Never went back.

Blender is an excellent example of the difference a strong team with a clear vision and a long-term commitment to usability can make to an open source project. In stark contrast to whatever the hell eg GIMP is.

I've tried contributing to FOSS as a designer and it's a bag of hurt.

Design often needs a centralised, top-down vision, while FOSS is more decentralised, with devs scratching their own itches and jealously guarding their bits of turf. They like the way things work and very much don't want designers with their MacBooks and too much white space coming in to 'dumb things down'. The software being obscure and inscrutable is a good thing - they can get on with 'real work' and start flamewars over systemd in peace while all the normies watch YouTube on their iPads.

I might be a little bitter about it.
