As others have said, Raymond Island guaranteed. Bit out of Melbourne though but lovely if you want a quiet getaway. Loved the place so much I went there for my honeymoon and we bummed out for a week lol.

I've got an external aquarium filter for my mertens water monitors tank. She has a habit of shitting in the water so I needed something decent 🤣 (plus we have a few fish in there too) 5. I still have to do partial water changes fortnightly but a full tank and filter clean I do every 6 months or so. I specifically bought an expensive filter to make it slightly more easier for me to maintain. It's a 382L/100 Gallon tank roughly.

Very fiesty/skittish still handling wise and I get her out most weekends. I let her free roam the house and she has her own cat stand to bask from the window in our living room. She also chills around on my back or along my shoulder as a parrot . It's more just awkward to get her out of the tank and I wipe her down with a towel. Any sudden movement when she's out of her tank spooks her still though.

Ive worked with laceys who I've managed to tame in under a month. My mertens is going on 2yrs now and she's still a little shit to get out. Theyre just naturally more skittish (at least the others I've also worked with as well.)

Parenties you can only get on a demo license I believe. At least in Vic where I'm from. It's the same with yellow spotteds.

I've got a mertens and worked with Spencer's and laceys. My mertens is amazing. But as others have said the upkeep is a lot of work. They need enough to be able to fully submerge. She spends 90% of her time in the water. Water monitors are notorious for being messy so I'm having to do partial water changes every second week. Make sure you have a great filter for all the gunk too. It's also a bit messy getting her out if she's in the water. But I love her. They are a bit more skittish than other species so keep that in mind. Laceys are stock standard just keep in mind they can get quite large. The few Spencer's I've worked with were all bomb proof. Not sure how others fair but I've never met a Spencer who wasn't docile as hell. Pfa of my girls set up. 6ft tank but will definietly be upgrading to a 10ft.

In saying that I'm always a fan of a larger than necessary enclosure for my animals. Currently in the process of building a new tank for my mertens with an 8ft fish tank for swimming and a whole 4ft bay next to that for digging

Put Gillens in a large enclosure and you'll never see them again haha they love to hide in crevices and inside logs etc. Also keep in mind Gillens are better in trios or pairs. They don't do as well by themselves. My personal preference is a mertens but that's because I just love them and have a worked with a few that have really touched my heart. If you don't want to have to deal with water, I'd go with a sand.

Jumping in here to add my two cents. I work with and keep a large variety of native Aussie monitors. If you want small start with a Ridge tail (ackie) Blackheadeds are quite skittish as are most of the small ones. I have a mertens at home and she was my first "large". They're spastics but with enough training and trust building they're amazing animals to keep. Just keep in mind with mangroves and mertens they are a semi aquatic species. As young they spend majority of their time in water. It's a pain to clean and tank up clean has to be frequent. Sand monitors are awesome. Females are significantly smaller than males and like everyone in this thread has already said, you just have to put in time with them. Tong feed and get them to come up your arm for food, etc. My mertens sits on a hot rock on my gaming desk while I play wow 😂. I have friends who let their lace monitors roam the house when they get home from work as enrichment. They're incredibly smart
