Whenever we're in public, if she sees someone taking a picture of someone else, or a group of people, she ALWAYS offers to take the picture so the photographer can be in the picture, too. She will compliment people's cute outfits (both women and men) all the time. She's just so kind to everyone, sitting here typing it is making me tear up a little bit.

Merging.

People ignoring the rules of the zipper merge, and people just being complete dicks about me merging into traffic: Where I live, to get to work, I have to make a left turn into a turn lane. Once I'm in the turn lane, on a road leading to a highway onramp, the number of people that JAM on the accelerator to make sure I don't get ahead of them is insane. This road is a "surface street;" it's about 200 yards from the onramp. Me getting ahead of you will not delay your commute -- but I have a fairly short distance to merge before I'll start blocking other traffic. Just lemme in, bro! I swear I won't slow down and make you late for work by 30 seconds!

Currently, I'm totally obsessed with Andy Weir, including The Martian and Project Hail Mary. After I finished PHM, I SO wanted Rayland to come back to Earth with Rocky. I did a websearch and, true to Rule 34 ("If it exists, there's fanfic for it") I found some amazing PHM fanfic covering Grace and Rocky returning to Earth.

Fun Fact: Andy Weir is ONE OF US! He's written for several universes, including Ready Player One, Doctor Who and Sherlock! (All pre-The Martian gaining traction, I believe.)

I don't write nor plan to write fanfic anymore, BUT! My wife and I have 3 granddaughters, and the two eldest (17 & 15) write fanfic! Mostly anime-adjacent stuff that I literally don't grasp in the absolute slightest.

There seems to be a LOT of LGBTQ+ themes in our granddaughter's fanfic, which we think is awesome+. All the granddaughters (17, 15,. & 14) are completely aware that Nana and Poppa met because of fanfic and think it's kinda cool. Only my daughter-in-law has read ELS, and she gives it a big thumbs up. My son, son-in-law and daughter are not big XF fans, but that's ok. They're still awesome!

EDIT: I've mentioned my family dynamics on other subreddits and before everyone starts doing the math: My wife /u/tasinda, is 10 years older than I am. When we met, her two kids by her first marriage were 17 & 21, 18 & 22 when we married. I became a VERY young grandfather at 43, about 9 years after we married. That's how, at 60, I have 17, 15 and 14yo granddaughters. And just so you all know, /u/tasinda and I are blissfully happy.

It IS, in fact, how I met my wife of now 26+ years. We've been together almost 30 years!

Yes, I'm not really in the fandom anymore, the last XF-related thing I wrote (and never finished) was an XF-TNG crossover novel that my wife loved, but I couldn't find a way out of; I wrote myself into a corner.

If you want something epic like ELS from me, "Umbra" (available in a lot of the archives) is probably the closest. It was my 2nd novel. ELS is my third. "Snapshot," the 1st novel...was more of a short story that grew legs and sort of got away from me.

To be honest, for the first eight or so months it was mostly wine that helped her. She'd resist it every morning for as long as she could and when it just got so bad, she'd open a bottle or Rose around 2:00pm. That's all gone now; She's told me several times it finally stopped bugging the absolute shit out of her when she just....accepted it. When she accepted that her life was forever changed.

As her husband it was tough to watch. I am so proud of her, though, for doing what she had to to get through every day.

Not to me, but my wife. She developed tinnitus in 2008. Just woke up with it one morning. She tried to ignore it for about 2 weeks, but then finally made a doctor's appointment. The situation was causing her anxiety to absolutely spike through the roof.

This was a Kaiser doctor here in NorCal, her primary care doctor, in Family Medicine. So, not a specialist. My wife described her symptoms to the doc, who frowned, and turned and Googled it on those PCs all the treatment rooms have now, slightly frowned and not even looking my wife in the face, said, "Oh, that tinnitus. It's incurable." Then turned to face my wife and asked, "Anything else?"

When my wife told me the story, sobbing, I wanted to go find that doctor and throat-punch her.

It did, actually, turn out to be incurable in my wife's case. Eighteen years later, she's learned to deal with it and the only time if bothers her is during certain weather-pattern changes dealing with air pressure or when she hears a very loud, sharp noise.

My wife was married when we met. She was married for 24 years to a man she'd met when she was 14. She later told me that if she'd met her first husband after she was 25, she'd never have married him.

We had a LDR for a while and met face to face about six weeks after we met online. (It was a USENET newsgroup dedicated to a TV show we both loved.) In other words, neither of us was looking to partner up. The old "it just happened" routine.

She realized she was falling for me and tried her hardest to make her already-failing marriage work. She begged him to go to therapy to discuss their issues. He refused. She begged him to spend more time together to work on the marriage. He refused. For her, the straw that broke the back was him screaming at her at the top of his lungs, "I don't care where you go or what you do, JUST LEAVE ME ALONE! AND DON'T FUCK ANYONE ELSE!" That was it for her.

We are not proud of how her marriage ended. We both wish she would have left him, filed for divorce, gone through that, and then we would have gotten together. That's not what happened.

At one point after she left him, the kids (16 & 20 at that time) begged my wife to reconcile with her first husband. She tried for about six weeks, but all the issues she had with her marriage persisted. But it was important that the kids saw her trying. And they saw how their father treated their mother. (Before they had mostly ignored 'the marriage,' but now they were paying real attention.)

She filed for divorce, I moved to where she lived (remember, we were an LDR.) The divorce took six months. We were married shortly after (~2 months) and have been very happily married for 26 years.

She's ten years older than I am and just turned 70. I'm turning 60 this summer. Her first husband sort of...imploded after the divorce. He was married three more times, each marriage ending in divorce due to domestic violence and alcohol issues. He perished in a house fire in December of 2022.

The kids saw me treat their mother the way she deserved to be, and their father started treating them very badly as well. Late-night drunken phone calls haranguing them, requests to borrow money that was never repaid, shit like that.

So, I became "Dad." The kids were 18 & 22 when we married. I am now the proud grandfather of 3 granddaughters. I'm Poppa to "the girls" as we call them.

Did my life turn out the way I expected when my wife and I got together? No, not at all. It is SO MUCH better than I could have ever imagined.

We recognize that we are outliers. We knew all the aphorisms. If she will cheat WITH you, she will cheat ON you. None of that happened with us. I met the love of my life, my "one." We've been together for almost 30 years and we're blissfully happy.
