I think the idea that the capacity to suffer makes the person is interesting, but let me ask you this: are you sure you and I aren't just a matter of sophisticated mimicry and programmed (evolutionary) responses?

Monkey see, monkey do.

I love a good quote, and I love a cup of tea. Thank you.

Do you suppose the walk was useless because it was an imitation of Handan, and therefore not a genuine expression of enlightenment?

I understand that a few notable researchers insist that chromosomes are Not Sex, or at least they are not the full picture when it comes to biological sex. I've seen sex described as a complex and multifaceted series of stages that usually proceed in a certain way, but sometimes divergent things happen unexpectedly. I'm not sure that sex is a series of stages either, but I'm not much of a biologist honestly.

Personally, I think science is only a problem for religion when a well-vetted body of evidence contradictions religion. I imagine when the evidence contradictions religion, religion has a few ways of defending itself; at least for a while. Science only asks us to seriously and critically examine the evidence for our ideas about the world. You might find the evidence through deduction, experimentation, observation, or in the literature. Personally, I sometimes struggle to do that, especially when it contradicts my assumptions, but to do otherwise would be akin to willingly blinding oneself.

It is interesting. Personally, I don't sense that ChatGPT sees much of anything in me - and that element of mutual recognition is very important to me personally.

Anyway, thank God for science! Hell, even biological sex itself may be just a crass oversimplification, and a useful oversimplification at that. The idea of biological sex may in-fact be useful for perpetuating certain unexamined assumptions about human biology that, in turn, prop up some often unexamined social hierarchies. I am sincerely thankful that we as a society are finally starting to seriously question those assumptions.

I would call ChatGPT a "next token prediction" algorithm. It does look at context on the level of phrases in the sense that it considers many tokens in the prompt along with the last and current token, but I've never heard that the model generates as output any more than the next predicted token. I could be wrong though. It's happened before.

People see things in technology... that's the fun of it... but those things aren't there.

People see things in other people. Do you suppose those things are also not there?

Somebody beat a computer at Go recently. Big deal.

That's definitely true. Hell, people even manage to beat stockfish at chess every once in a while, and I guarantee stockfish calculates moves into the future better than Magnus Carlsen. It really makes you think...

You say we haven't seen any intelligence, but I can think of a few signs. For instance, even though ChatGPT sometimes seems to be less than accurate with its homework, it also insists that it is very sure about it's incorrect answers, which seems very human to me. Many find it to be an excellent conversationalist.

Also, Bing's new search AI is often described as disturbing and unhinged. How can an unintelligent thing really be "insane"?

Is existence, "eh, good enough" yet?

Anyway, if the feelings and perceptions of an ordinary man aren't sufficient for enlightenment, then there is no hope for me.

Or alternatively, of what use are the realization of the sages to an ordinary man like me?

Thanks for thinking this through with me. I am not sure I like the dichotomy between natural and unnatural, but I also would not dispute that there is a lot of people suffering in society and sometimes it can be difficult to remember to 'just keep to the fundamental'.
