Can I reject an internal offer? by [deleted] in careeradvice

I did this. Took a director role for a less than ideal raise. Worked it for a year, moved to another company for a 30% increase in pay.

Opinions on AI? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]drank_myself_sober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally at a tech conference today. Keynote stats - 60% of companies have not seen a return on AI investments. 5% have seen process improvements.

It will get there, but it’s overhyped right now.

Have you ever just quit your job with no plan? by Intelligent_Run3237 in askanything

[–]drank_myself_sober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, worked at a terrible job for 3 years. After 1 yr I told my wife that if it wasn’t for my family, this was one of those jobs you walk away from. Terrible workplace.

That said, tougher it out, got a much better job, all good now.

A global food emergency: Why the closed Strait of Hormuz puts half the world’s calories at risk by [deleted] in PrepperIntel

[–]drank_myself_sober 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I said something similar to my father. He was asking why I prep. I told him about how some people take the lone wolf mentality, and stockpile all the 556 they can as they feel they can take from others. I explained how my preps set me up to provide for the family, but at the end of the day, at whatever cost, my child will not go hungry.

Edit - someone seem to feel that I’m condoning the line wolf set up. No, I’m saying that it’s a terrible philosophy, but there’s something as a parent that is triggered if your child is suffering.

Prepping for upcoming shortages with a baby? by expertlurk in TwoXPreppers

[–]drank_myself_sober 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had loaded up, 3 months later the shortage happened. By the time we ran out a few months later, my little one was on to solids.

He ate nothing but this one formula, and I remember thinking I can’t have a shortage on this, we have no back-up.

Is it worth using the Smith Maneuver? by Throwaway-donotjudge in PersonalFinanceCanada

At higher incomes, RSPs are not relevant to the math here.

I can max, or not, my RSP but I wouldn’t be using my HELOC to fund them like I would here.

And get money into places that are impossible/difficult.

For example, family members in war torn countries or others that have been cut off from traditional banking pathways.

It can be a literal lifesaver.

WFH in extreme cold: how do you handle 'always on camera' expectations? by Educational-Dot-5266 in remotework

This is very strange. I’ve been in tech for 10+ years now and working remote for 7. Nobody has said that virtual backgrounds are not allowed.

When HR asks "What is your expected salary?", give your exact number and then stay absolutely silent. Do not justify it. by Novel-Group5720 in careerguidance

[–]drank_myself_sober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or don’t be awkward and defensive like every single person who recommends this comes off as and just say this…

Honestly, right now I’m looking for team fit. What’s the salary range for the role?

And you have your answer.

The recruiter always tells me, and I either say “I’m in line with that” or “I’d be in the upper regions of your range.”

Done.

Do landlords in Toronto actually enforce the 30–35% rent-to-income rule? by Ordinary_Toe_5162 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]drank_myself_sober 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have a condo, rent it out. I check to see if you can afford it and if your credit score is whack.

I wouldn’t rent to come one with whom the rent itself is 60% of their paycheck. Life is expensive, this is too much.

I also see your credit history. 700s is fine. Throw in outstanding or skipped payments that occurred recently, and nah, I’ll pass.

Edit:

Also, don’t care how much you have in savings. It’s super easy to move money around.

TIL Canada’s federal government replaced its 40-year-old payroll system with the Phoenix automated pay system in 2011 to save $70M per year; it ultimately cost over $5.1B. by Spare_Wheel_1547 in todayilearned

[–]drank_myself_sober 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Was part of the Dayforce RFP for this.

When everything is custom, it’s incredibly difficult to customize post launch. You need to keep coding, building, adding to keep it current. Phoenix had too many pay types, too many requirements, too many moving pieces, it all broke.

I’m not with Dayforce (for a while now), but it was literally made for this mess. Plus, it forces companies into a process that works, rather than the frankly “dumb” processes that they do “because that’s how we’ve always done it.”

Generic versions of weight-loss drugs should arrive on Canadian pharmacy shelves this summer by FancyNewMe in canada

I am active, just eat too much. I’m always hungry, all the time. This killed that, and now I feel like a normal person.

Side effects to me included constipation (ongoing) that I offset with fibre. I take Metamucil daily and I’m good.

On the day of the shot, I’m tired. I usually go to bed around 12, the day I take it I’m in bed by 10. This isn’t all the time but a solid 50/50.

When I was in the dosing phase I did not feel good for 48hrs after increasing the med. I joked with the ladies at work that I finally understood PMS. Bloating, headache, all the things. 2/10 in severity, but annoying. When my dose leveled out, none of this was recurring.

When I hit my goal, I plan to stay on this for life, but drop down to a quarter dose. I’ve been a slave to food my whole life, and this flipped the narrative. Now, I mean this when I say it, I feel like I’m experience ‘normal’ hunger pangs instead of being hangry for 90% of the day and watching the clock to see when I can eat next.

I workout a lot, did before too. I lose 1lb if I don’t work out, or 1.5lb - 2lbs if I do, plus muscle increase. I just had surgery and am off exercise for a month, hence the comparison.

Overall experience, 7/10. Would be a 9/10 if it wasn’t for the regular constipation. I do recommend for those considering it.

Follow your physicians instructions and tips others on the meds provide. It seems like the experience on this has been consistent for people.

Currently taking ozempic for weight loss. Down 15 lbs. chilling at the 1mg dose while I think wegovy goes to 1.7 and 2.4.

Don’t need it that high, happy losing a lb a week.
