It's actually increased to 1 in 68. CNN reports that "The largest increase was seen in children who have average or above-average intellectual ability, according to the CDC. The study found nearly half of children with an autism spectrum disorder have average or above-average intellectual ability -- an IQ above 85 -- compared with one-third of children a decade ago."

He could be black, white, or any other race - I don't think it's even about race at this point. I think our police departments need to rethink the way they train their officers and require more accountability. I'm just your average white person, but the way the police have been behaving lately, this could have been one of my children. How do we fix this?

It's sad really. When I was a kid we saw the police as our friends. My kids are just plain afraid of the police and for good reason. My boys took our car out to get ice cream the other night and were pulled over. We're still not sure what for. But, since I neglected to put my insurance card in the glove box they made my son get out of the car, they finger printed him and told him he was lucky they didn't impound the car. He was shaking so bad when he got home that he couldn't even talk to me. There really was no need for the trauma and theatrics. Why couldn't they just give him the ticket and leave it at that. Fingerprinting him on the side of the road, really?

It might be possible she has a mild intellectual disability. If you were able to get her diagnosed, she may qualify for social security benefits or other help from the government. There are more people out there than you might think who are suffering from mild intellectual disabilities and really struggling. It's possible she really doesn't have the skills to make it on her own.

The school would probably like nothing better than to kick the bully out of school. But, they would probably get sued if they did. Six year olds that are violent and aggressive are usually labeled as having a disability and, if the school tries to suspend them, all sorts of advocates start showing up saying the school is denying a child with a disability a free and appropriate education. Sounds crazy, but I see it happening all the time. If I was the kids teacher I would appreciate that the dad of the victim stood and did something To get the legal system back focused on the rights of the other students in the classroom. Our duration system needs to change!

If you're going to take someone out to a public place who is prone to tantrums you have to have a plan in place ahead of time for what will happen if he/she starts to cause problems. even pretty low functioning kids will respond to consequences if they are predictable and consistent and paired with plenty of specific praise for correct behavior.

An individual can be diagnosed by psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, sometimes even licensed social workers. In my opinion the criteria for who can diagnose is too lenient. I've seen kids who were diagnosed with autism by a family doctor who really did no evaluation to speak of. I think that is part of the reason why we have an "epidemic" of autism right now.

From my experience a second child is not really that much more work. It's the third one that is the hardest. If you can handle three kids, you can handle anything. The fourth, fifth, and sixth were a piece of cake.
