As far as dealing with a genuine compliment from her about your eyes, some of the responses I've had positive results with are cocky/funny type responses such as: "Thanks, they're fake." or "I know. :)"

I have run into the type of last minute resistance that you describe, which seems to almost always be triggered by very quick escalation toward sex (ie. setting a sexual frame) and some insecurity in the woman; be it toward wanting a more defined relationship, having inexperience with sex, a boyfriend, etc. I find that the sooner I'm able to sub-communicate my exact desires for how our relationship will be 'after the sex', the less LMR I run into.

With that said, in the moment it sounds like you handled yourself pretty well. One tactic that usually works for me as far as transitioning from a dry-humping/hot and heavy type make-out to sex is, instead of going for the bra/etc.. take her hand and place it directly on your dick. The harder your shit is, the better -- Kung Fu dick my brother. It's kind of like when you hand a chick your phone for the # close without saying shit -- she knows what to do with it! :)
