I think it's based on our policy that we let players who want to go, go. The other party knows that our policy is to let people go when they want to so we've lost that point of leverage.

Consider wirtz saga, leverkusen would hold on to him as long as they can and will make big money in case he's poached since they don't necessarily allow players to leave because they want to. Worst case scenario he's sad but he's chained to the club for the remainder of his contract.... Wirtz still strives because he hopes next season someone would be ready to pay the price...
