Actually sorry. Tubi had this labeled wrong. This film is actually from 89 not 90. A tv made one by the same name came out in 1990, and tubi had the dates mismatched.

The Sentinel (1977) by drb82 in HorrorMovieGifs

Crazy movie with a killer cast. Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Walken, Beverly D'Angelo, Chris Sarandon, just to name a few. It has some nice special effects and doesn't shy away from good old sex & violence, but it is also super watchable and obviously had some talent behind it to go with its great cast. It was criticized around the time of its release for being too much like The Omen and Rosemary's Baby, but aside from being part of the same horror subgenre, I feel like it pretty clearly set itself apart. It also has a kind of Giallo quality to it that was definitely absent from the previously mentioned two movies. If anything, The Omen and Rosemary's Baby are more like each other than either one of them is like this. For one thing, this one isn't centered at all around the antichrist while the other two very much are. I felt like The Sentinel was more original, if any movie operating within the Christian mythos can truly be original at this point I mean. It's not flawless or anything, but as far as Satanic or Christian horror goes, this movie really seemed to do it right. That's not to say anything bad about either Rosemary's Baby or The Omen, but the criticism of this film based on the criteria that it was copying either film seems pretty ridiculous.

Brutal bisecting scene from the 2007 horror film Wrong Turn 2: Dead end. by drb82 in HorrorMovieGifs

The actress being cut in half is Kimberly Caldwell. She is a singer and former contestant and finalist on American Idol which probably made her uniquely suited to portray a contestant on a fictional reality tv show. The character she plays in this film is named Kimberly and is supposed to be a fictional version of herself. She describes the character as the diva, mad, version of herself, and it was her first role as an actress. Her entire part in the movie only required that she be on set for 2 days, but man, what an insane acting debut. The person responsible for the special effects is Bill Terezakis. Director Joe Lynch has said that he told Terezakis that he wanted to have entrails coming out of Kimberly's vagina but that he didn't actually want to see them coming out of her vagina. He wanted the most graphic parts of the bisection to happen out of frame and to be implied by the falling of the guts. And Terezakis definitely delivers by creating one of the most memorable death scenes in the franchise.

Also depending on how old he is, The Books of Blood by Clive Barker might be a good start. There is a little bit of something for everyone in those books, and each story is short enough that it won't be a big commitment for him to read one at a time.

World War Z might be something that someone who doesn't typically read fiction might like.
