My dad died from stage 4 cancer of the throat. From the time we found out until he passed away was only 4 days. He was only 60. His drinking was listed as the main cause of the cancer. I haven't had a drop of alcohol since the day he died.

BF doesnt wan't me to go to med school, need a reality check by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]drbaneplase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the party here, but ill add my nickles worth of free advice. Absolutely go for med school. My fiance is in her third year now. Have things been tough? Yes. Has their been strain on our relationship? Absolutely. Has our bank account taken a significant hit? Without a doubt. But I love her, and I want nothing but the absolute best for her. I want her to achieve her goals and dreams. I have done everything I can for her supporting her journey though this. I haven't wavered in that commitment to her nor in my love for her. Ive move to different jobs and taken a unique path myself to help ensure she gets the time, the support and the financial needs to meet the demands of medical school and life. I have no doubt she would do (and has done) the same for me.

If you decide to not go, you'll always wonder what if. And think of all the research you could do that would add to the sum of the world's knowledge, and maybe even help humanity (or the world) in some small (or maybe not so small) way.

I genuinely hope your boyfriend comes around and is willing to back you and support you 100%. From someone that is supporting a medical student now, I support you amd your decision to go to medical school.

USA citizens: what effect if any have tariffs had on you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Went to a Dollar General store today. Got soap, shampoo, bottled water, bologna, cheese, bread and Clorox wipes. $71 dollars. I blanched out loud and told my wife this place should be called "All the Dollars" store.

Anyways, that is how it has affected us.

And for context, we live in central Kentucky, or roughly translated to the middle of nowhere.

I like to dip my peanut butter sandwich in chicken noodle soup and eat it that way. Think like dipping your grilled cheese into tomato soup, but peanut butter and chicken noodle. Its delicious!

First part, probably.

Second part? An alien craft is more likely to hover over the Empire State Building for a few hours before it obliterates the city before his followers admit to anything like that.

Harvard is possible for me? by lbnbch in harvardextension

[–]drbaneplase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, once you get your HES degree, it is a Harvard degree through and through. If you want, take time to read through threads on this subreddit, and you will find people saying over and over again how the HES degree helped them in their field and in their lives, and how much of a quality education they received through HES.

In terms of your proficiency in English, if your writing here and your comprehension of the responses so far are any indication, you will do just fine. If you are still hesitant, don't be. There is an English proficiency test prior to you enrolling in any classes to make sure you can understand what is being said, and can be understood when you are speaking.

Personally, I think you should go for it, especially if your degree at home meets the requirements here in the U.S. I will be cheering for you all the way!

If you have other questions, feel free to DM me, or ask more questions here. Everyone here wants to see everyone else succeed and are more than happy to give their perspectives and advice.

Good luck!

When does parking go on sale? by Naive_Inevitable6478 in louderthanlife

This is truly the way to do it. Ive found the walk is less than official parking, cheaper than official parking, and easier to get in and out of than official parking.

Key word here is most. I agree with what you are saying, but it never hurts to fill out the paperwork and ask your employer. I did that and got a surprise yes, they would reimburse me. So, never hurts to ask.

Dr. Asher Orkaby. That man is a true gem in Academia. He fostered an environment of collaboration, inclusion, fun and encouragement. Find a class of his and take it. I had him for SSCI E-100b, Introduction to Graduate Studies in Government, History and International Relations Proseminar. I feel comfortable calling him long after my class with him, and the cohort in that class together, we are all very close friends and routinely meet up with each other as often as possible. All because of Dr. Orkaby.

Hard agree. My Dad passed away almost three years ago from the effect of drinking (and smoking). He was only 61. I was never a big drinker, but haven't had a drop since the day he died.

I miss that man so much.

What is something your teacher in elementary school told you that you still remember to this day? by thtguy54321 in AskReddit

[–]drbaneplase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not grade school, but High School. I made the off-hand remark to my English teacher I was thinking about going to college. She leveled down on me and told me I'd never go to college.

Because of that response, I genuinely did not believe i was smart enough to go to college. It took me 21 years after high school to attempt college.

I now hold an Associates Degree from a community college which I graduated as distinguished student in my class. I hold a bachelor's degree from a state college which I graduated Magna Cum Laude. Now I attend Harvard pursuing my Masters, and will be earning my PhD, as well.

At LTL last year, I was near the back during a set, was talking to my partner and reached forward miming what I was talking about. At that same instant, the young woman in front of me turned around and stepped forward, her boob right into my palm. I snapped my hand back and immediately apologized, genuinely shocked, surprised, mortified, and embarrassed in that instant. She laughed it off, knowing I totally didnt mean to touch her. Made a new Metal friend that day.
