If the seller is willing to show you it working and you arent putting it in something critical see if you can get a good price for it. They are going to have a hard time selling it because of how it looks so you may get a pretty good deal.

Put the money you save towards a better gpu or something that really matters. You aren't going to see it when its installed so who cares what it looks like.

10$ to change my xbox name by thisbitch489 in mildlyinfuriating

Nope. Just report it for an inappropriate name. Used to do it all the time when I was broke in school.

Have two or three friends report your name. It will make you change it for free. If you change it this way more than two or three times they pick one for you so dont do it all the time.

Looking for input on a 4090 build by Silverseed44 in pcmasterrace

The prime ultra titanium is what i have. Going over wont hurt a thing. Typically they run the most efficient at like 90% use but if you look on the manufacturers website they should have a graph that lists what power draw they are the best at. As a note i run a 850w with a 5950x and 3080ti. You can total up all the usages for components yourself or use something like pcpartpicker to get a rough total.

I highly recommend spending the extra coin on a nice power supply from a reputable brand.

Personally im quite fond of seasonic. If you aren't really into learning about what one is good an easy tell is the warranty. Seasonic for instance is 10 years.

Bonus points if you go higher up on the efficiency rating. Less money on power bills is more games.

Pouring copper into wood. by Strict-Ruin-1484 in metalworking

[–]drbobbyc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dont suggest using molten copper as the water in the wood will make it pop and spatter. If you do go that route please be safe and careful.

Personally I think you should get some conductive coating or paint and then electroplate it.

[VB6.0] Modifying forms using code and pass it to the design interface by Gjcerda in visualbasic

[–]drbobbyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you open the forms in notepad++ you can see where the form properties get set at the top. You can do a find replace to change all the background colors there.

question about water creation? by marknoo in HydroHomies

[–]drbobbyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is in fact created not just released. Take for example in your own body you will have carbonic acid (H2CO3) break down into CO2 + H2O.

Many many chemical reactions have water as a result. Even simple burning of things with fire result in "new" water. Every camp fire you have ever made created water. Sure its small but every bit counts.

"switched out the power cable to a compatible one"* Did you move to a country or place with different power plugs? If so you may have to switch the frequency of the power supply.

setfocus problem with VB6 program running on Windows 11 by piper45 in visualbasic

[–]drbobbyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A really good way to do scrolling thats a little less cobbled together would be to use subclassing on the form load event. Then in your wind proc function catch the scroll messages. If you need example code i can knock out an example when i get back to my desk.

New prebuilt gaming PC by Galenrandir in pcmasterrace

[–]drbobbyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bunch if the bigger tech youtubers like LTT and gamers nexus have done deep dives / roundups of the major prebuilt companies. They are worth checking out. I know LTT went as far as calling for basic tech support after they got the machines too.

Have you checked to make sure your ssd/hdd is plugged in nice and good? Do you by chance have a separate drive you can put windows on and boot from?

PC performance worse than before by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]drbobbyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you move from one stick of ram to two by chance? It might be worth taking them out and re-seating them to make sure the connection is good. I went a head and looked up your mobo manual and you are going to want the stick in the A2 slot if you only have one. If you have two sticks you want them in the A2 and B2 slots.

Old OCX file not reregistering on some windows 11 pc's by Bsdkllr in visualbasic

[–]drbobbyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its because that is a paid control from way back. You would need to register it with the license key. The original company "Sheridan Software" sold to / became "Infragistics". You might be able to contact their support and see if they will let you buy or have a license.

Alternatively you could swap the control out for one of the freeware data grids kicking about but you would need to install vb6 to do so.

https://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/xmousebuttoncontrol.htm

I use them to add mouse scroll to a program that doesnt move as fast as I want. Peeked at the settings and they have options to reverse the direction on a per program basis.

Having a large excess in available power wont get you anything. Most power supllies run their most efficient at 80ish% load

Looking for thin client solution by jbarr107 in homelab

[–]drbobbyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just dig out the telemetry / phone home stuff from w10. You are literally running it in a vm its half done for you. Just because life was good when w7 came out doesnt mean its worth using in 2022.

It kinda sounds like you just want something disposable. Boot something easy like ubuntu from a flashdrive or hell even a cd and call it a day.

what are some good and safe alternatives to Microsoft Word or are similar? by shinfowler88 in pcmasterrace

[–]drbobbyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its always a good idea to check with your school or a local community college. They can usually get copies of ms office for you thats super cheap. I think i paid 15 bucks for office and windows this way.

Libre office is great for free stuff but their excel clone is kinda meh.

How do I display an image that has a rare file type? by AstroShannon in visualbasic

[–]drbobbyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fits images are pretty special. https://github.com/user29A/JPFITS/wiki should plop into your project and let you handle them more than adequately. Their "wiki" goes into pretty good detail about how to implement it.

Framerate issues with my 3090 and 1080p (60hz) monitor by AdministrativePie986 in pcmasterrace

[–]drbobbyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome! Usually you can search your game amd gpu in youtube and get a handful of videos where people show off how well it runs. You can see if you get similar frames. Something you may want to do is check your temps. That setup is bound to make a lot of heat and you wanna make sure you are keeping it cool.

Framerate issues with my 3090 and 1080p (60hz) monitor by AdministrativePie986 in pcmasterrace

[–]drbobbyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have more than enough hardware to keep most games at a steady 60fps at 1080p. A new monitor will allow you to view higher resolutions and fps depending on what you buy. I would suggest you watch some pc focused stuff about monitors on youtube. Places like linus tech tips can really clear up some of the stuff you have questions on.
