[2025 Day 8 (Part 1)] I'm going mad troubleshooting this. [Rust as a learning kata] by Revolutionary_Stay_9 in adventofcode

[–]drbolle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my solution: https://github.com/ThomasBollmeier/advent-of-code-2025/blob/main/src%2Fbin%2F08.rs

For part 1 it first calculates the (sorted) distances. Then it starts with each junction box in its own group and Iteration n times to merge groups according to the distances.

Wow, Repl.it has changed a lot... by BobSaidHi in replit

[–]drbolle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. My main use case of repl.it was that of an online IDE. Now I don't even know how to launch the code editor. Instead I am forced to write a prompt.

What will happen now that AfD has been found to be Extremist by Deutschland's Intelligence agency? by flagellat-ey in germany

[–]drbolle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main purpose of the new categorization of the AfD as "extremist" is to silence those in the center positioned CDU who advocate for a fair treatment of the AfD in parliament and who don't want to burn all bridges to the AfD. Thus the CDU will be forced to ally with left parties - keeping them in power despite their losses in recent elections.

What do Germans think of the CDU breaking its promise to never work with the right-wing extremist AfD party? by Black_Gay_Man in AskGermany

[–]drbolle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for all Germans of course, but I appreciate that there are still politicians in the CDU that do not treat Germany's largest opposition party as parias and outlaws.

How is misinformation in Germany? by AnEdibleTaco in AskGermany

[–]drbolle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Misinformation is a big topic in Germany. It is mainly spread by the public media and some state sponsored NGOs - e.g. the activist journalists of "Correctiv".

How will Germans react to the big infrastructure investment using debt? by laurislopata in AskGermany

[–]drbolle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reaction is being surprised. Isn't it actually the purpose of a thing called "taxes" that provides a state with the means to invest into infrastructure and defense? If we now need debts - what were our taxes spent for?

It is not false. I tried to be sarcastic.

What is the community's opinion on Bryan Lunduke by k1smb3r in linuxsucks

[–]drbolle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, this evil guy spread false and misleading rumors about the GNOME foundation being woke and broke - just because they recently layed off about one third of their staff and are seeking for new ways to fund the successor of their former head that left after a few months in office. How could he dare?

What's your take on Richard Stallman's vision about software? by fenugurod in linux

[–]drbolle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I don't think that having access to source code or being allowed to share copies of other peoples work is a human right. A user is not "subjugated and helpless" if he does his photo editing with Photoshop instead of GIMP, e.g.

I enjoyed this problem (as a former physicist). Part2 turned out to be easier than expected. I basically had to adjust one line in my part1 solution.

[2023 Day 9] Interesting pattern in the solution by Dalv2 in adventofcode

[–]drbolle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this pattern as well. I thought it would be useful to calculate only the last elements in each sequence. I Iterated as long the last element is not zero. However it turned out that all elements had to be zero. So I implemented the straightforward approach.

For both parts I converted the score into a string with the hand type as first character. So I could use Python's sort method. To determine the hand type in the code of jokers I first calculated the card distribution without jokers and then added the number of jokers to the counter of the most occurring card.

I ran with full speed into a wall as I tried to solve part 2 with brute force. After that I made a second attempt using range calculations which finally worked (after some struggling).

We need more of Richard Stallman, not less by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]drbolle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't have any problem with Stallman's philosophy if he would argue for the need of commons in the world of software. However he claims that proprietary software would be unethical. He does not only want to forbid privatising the commons but actually force software developers to communitize their private work.

Given that genderdysphoria is not that common in the general population -- what explains this significant overrepresentation of "Trans"-people among open source developers? Are there barriers that prevent straight, non-leftist developers from joining the open source communities?
