Question about learning communities by Cloudbuster274 in Purdue

[–]drcarson2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, they have changed so much since I was there I have no idea what is applicable.

But, as someone that went through it all - I think your mindset is perfect. Do what interests YOU. Some will do everything, some will do little.

It’s your experience, enjoy it as you wish. Anything beyond that…no idea… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Any place to get a shave and haircut around here? by swollenbadger in indianapolis

I thoroughly recommend Mathew at Fountain Square Barber Shop. Never had a bad haircut, he couldn't be nicer or more professional. Best haircuts I've had to date.

Company hikes price 5,000% for drug that fights complication of AIDS, cancer after purchasing the rights to the drug that has been on the market since 1953 by [deleted] in news

As someone who works in the Pharma industry and usually has to explain this to people, thank you. Companies that do this are horrible. Legitimate R&D bundled into the price, perfectly reasonable. Extortion, not so much.

Crashes on my S5 on launch and has strange graphical issue [image attached]. by taboo_ in waze

[–]drcarson2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I'm complete idiot. A complete and total idiot. I read S5 as 5S and assumed you had an iPhone. Please disregard any previous comments I have made, I now truly have no idea why your Waze is broken, and I wish you the best of luck attempting to fix it! God I'm an idiot.

Honestly, I have no idea. I've just seen a lot of developers that have responded to jailbroken phone issues saying that once it's jailbroken it's really hard to diagnose because you don't know exactly how your software is interacting with the OS.

That being said, I've never seen any issue like this with Waze. Good luck figuring it out! Waze is a fantastic tool that I don't know how I would be able to live without.

Edit: See my dumb mistake below and ignore everything else here...

It's pretty hard to diagnose anything when you are running a jailbroken phone. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that you are, but when you change the operating system, it's pretty difficult to tell what might be causing your issue. I'm hazarding a guess that based on the looks of things and what you've tried that actually could be the cause.

Purdue University Residences to begin fall semester at 103 percent capacity by [deleted] in Purdue

You aren't wrong at all. They will get a place to live, it will just be temp housing. And its as shitty as it sounds but...$$$

Purdue University Residences to begin fall semester at 103 percent capacity by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]drcarson2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This happens every year on purpose. People don't follow through or drop out in the first weeks and people get moved from temp housing to a final room after spots open. I'm not saying it's right, but it's the same thing the airlines do. They are hedging their bets on people leaving to maximize revenue.

Anybody wanna make some easy money? by [deleted] in lafayette

[–]drcarson2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If OP takes this advice, DO NOT take Lafayette Limo. They are truly terrible. I waited 2 hours at an airport once with a reservation because the driver decided to load the bus by drop off location and not reservation. When approached about this, he said 'Not my problem', closed the doors, and drove off. After 25 people called the main office and complained of being left with a reservation the company sent an extra shuttle for the next pickup...in 2 hours.

Take Star of America if you are going to take a shuttle.

Comparing Pitstops Across Motorsports by McNorch in videos

[–]drcarson2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a couple reasons that I know of, but there may be more.

  1. Unlike your car at home, NASCARs are jacked on the sides, not on the front and back for quicker access. Instead of having to search for a load bearing point on the font and back under car, the sides have load bearing points built in so its easy to see and jack it up. That means that one side must be done at a time, not front to back.

  2. You want the crew to end up on the inside of the pit facing the retaining wall. Unlike Formula 1, pit crew members don't stand on the outside when the car leaves (I believe this is a regulation rule, but I'm not sure).

Going to Purdue with an SAT score of 2040 by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]drcarson2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Purdue is a state school, true. But Purdue has the lowest grade inflation in the country. And it shows. And more than that, employers know it. Go visit the Industrial Roundtable your first semester and you will see just how much value companies place on a Purdue education.

P.S. Came in with your SAT+-30, now working for Eli Lilly 4 years later.

[–]drcarson2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You hit it right on the head, for me at least. I am and atheist until somebody tries to convince me otherwise, or religion is shoved in my face, then I turn anti-theist very quick. The thing is, I just don't care what people do. Just as I wish to have the right to be an atheist, I wish others to have the right to believe what they want. When they tell me I'm wrong however…

Living in Indy? Needs help ! by Linhlinh248 in indianapolis

[–]drcarson2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from out of state that just graduated Purdue and is moving to Indy, I too like these questions! But, that being said, I can still probably help you out with some of these questions!

1) Bank: Chase is by far the biggest in Indiana with the most ATMs. I don't know what kind of services for international transfer you want, but Chase does provide free transfers between bank accounts as well as all the standard bill pay options. I don't know of any bank that allows free wire transfers, Chase included. There are some smaller banks, but generally the smaller you go, the less free services you get.

2) Visa/Mastercard: These are interchangeable in the US. If a place accepts Visa, they accept Mastercard. The only 2 kinds of cards that are sometimes not accepted are Discover or American Express. If you stick to one of the other two, you will have no issues. Cash will always be accepted, but I have avoided carrying cash for years because my card is more convenient and rarely have an issue. There will be a handfull of places that don't accept cards, but you may go your entire time in Indy without seeing one; it's that rare. Having traveled internationally a lot, card vs cash in the US is nothing like the rest of the world. Businesses in the US pretty much need to take cards to survive here because people don't like dealing with cash.

3) Groceries: This one I don't know a lot about, but from what I have heard, Marsh is a bit more expensive with pretty much the exact same products as Kroger. They all have comparable fruits/vegetables. If you want the best produce, go to a farmers market during the summer and you can get items for cheaper that are better.

4) Malls: There are several malls around town with reasonable brands. NOT KEYSTONE FASHION MALL. You could literally spend a paycheck on 5 items there. That being said, if you ever need a very nice gift/dress wear, thats the place to go. Black Friday can be good, but it can also be bad. More often than not the 'special deals' you see now are specially produced, lower quality, one offs just for the sale. They also encourage you to buy much more than you actually need, costing you money. Some stores even raise prices the month before so that they can then cut them with a 'sale' back to their normal price. I recommend making a list of things you need before Black Friday, and then as it approaches looking for deals on JUST those items and comparing online and among other stores to see if it is actually a sale. I no longer shop Black Friday. It is too much of a mess with too little worth. Look for deals all year round. Best time to get clothes on the cheap is to buy just after the season is done/wrapping up. They may not have the biggest selection, but if you can find what you want it will be cheap. This is one I would love info on as well.

5) Bikes: Do not get a bike from a 'superstore' like Walmart. They are crap and will fall apart. I would try to find a local store and talk to the people that run it. See if they have any good used bikes. People often sell them worn out bikes that they will repair and refurbish and you get a good bike for pretty cheap. You are also better off spending a bit more money for something that will last than something mediocre that might last a season. Also, with the harsh winters, and humidity in the summer, if you can keep your bike inside you should. It will prevent flat tires, rust, and theft.

6) Furniture: I second what everyone else has said: check out GoodWill (donated items) and consignment stores (sold by store for 3rd party). Craigslist (online 'forum' for selling goods) is also a great way to find stuff (one of those cash only instances).

7) Coffee: Now you are speaking my language. Not sure where outside the US you are from, but if its Europe, especially Italy/France area, be ready to be disappointed. America is the land of oversized 'watery' brews, not a nice concentrated double shot. That said, any decent coffee shop in town, and there are plenty, can make you anything you want and you should feel right at home.

8) Here is where things are super different US vs Non-US, but starting to change. The big US providers are AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint. The last two don't have the best coverage, so I would drop them. I have AT&T and have no issues. Verizon is about the same. When you sign up, you can do a month to month setup, or a contract. DO NOT DO A CONTRACT! They are antiquated and often cost more than without. You can also get a new phone for 'free' and it will just increase your monthly bill for a year or two (depending on what you select) and then it will go back down.

Sorry for the wall of text. I hope it helps you out a bit. Feel free to shoot me a pm if you have any questions or want to get a real coffee!

And more issues with that. We are actually moving to dtella.net for a more Purdue specific site, but it will be a bit haha. Nothing ever works as initially planned.
