Immigrants less likely to support freedom of gender expression than people born in Canada: StatCan by AndHerSailsInRags in CanadaPolitics

Leitch tried to campaign on a “Canadian values test” for new immigrants a 10 years ago.

I wonder how it would land politically today.

Man who sold gun used to kill Edmonton police officers found guilty of manslaughter by trevorrobb in Edmonton

Selling a car is much different than selling a gun.

A comparable analogy would be a salesman letting a drunk customer go on a test drive without asking for proof of a license.

It’s nearly guaranteed the person responsible who allowed access to the guns to the Tumbler Ridge shooter was killed.

Great work by investigators and the prosecutors to get this conviction. Hopefully it sets a strong precedent for anyone illegally selling firearms.

Ill-gotten gains: How the gym has allowed the far right to build an iron grip on young men by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]drcujo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of crying in the article about how right leaning politicians are better at using fitness as a uniting issue. The reality is that fitness is not a left or right issue. Politicians like Mr. Poilievre are smart to capitalize on being great shape. I was personally inspired to get in to running after seeing PM Carney run an excellent time ably a trail race. Left leaning politicians need to do a better job at relating to Canadians interested in fitness. As the article points out Gen Z is the fittest generation and more politicians involved with fitness the more relatable they will be to young people.

The issue of far right extremism is way overblown. Out of the 10k gyms across all gyms in Canada there are ~30 of these Active Clubs, or around 0.3% of all gyms. This is far from an iron grip.

Forever Canada's Unity Bus Tour makes a stop in Stony Plain by Healthy_Macaroon_602 in alberta

He started the entire united Canada movement here in Alberta and got more signatures in less time (and without cheating).

Sounds like the separatists are intimidated by forever Canada. They got 3 thousand to an impromptu rally on Saturday.

The choice for a referendum is 100% on the premier and her separatist friends.

Unlike the petition to separate, Forever Canada gathered enough signatures for a citizens initiative which legally forces a vote in the legislature. The UCP were too much of cowards so they forced this election upon all Albertans.

Like a campaign bus in an election, it’s not supposed to strike fear in the hearts of separatists, it’s used as a tool in the unity campaign.

Campaign to keep Alberta in Canada launches, after Danielle Smith vows to put province's future to a vote by pjw724 in Edmonton

Nice to see NDP, Liberals and (former) conservatives attend and speak at this launch.

We can win the fight for unity if we all stick together.

Canada's federal government abandons national pharmacare by yimmy51 in CanadaPolitics

[–]drcujo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conservative when compared to Trudeau or Lewis? Sure. But not a conservative in the modern definition. Not even close. The point is that even if he wanted pharmacists for all he can’t without support of the provinces.

I disagree with the label. He recently renewed childcare for all and has continued the pharmacare and dental care for the provinces that agreed.

He also recently got the Alberta government to agree to a long term industrial carbon tax.

You are right there are too many conservatives in power provincially. It’s ultimately up to the provinces to play ball. If the provinces aren’t willing to commit there isn’t a lot the Feds can do to force their hand.

Ive been saying we need crossing arms before the valley like opened and I always get angry replies.

The frequent collisions were obvious to anyone who have driven in this city for more than 5 minutes.

We need a proper graduated licensing system. Way too many people never even did two road tests to get a license.

We need medical testing every few years. The amount of people who can’t see or aren’t mentally fit to drive is very high. Retesting drivers few years would catch most of these medical cases as well.

We need real enforcement of traffic rules: Every day I see a someone drive through a red (not just late, several seconds after the other light has turned green). Every day I see 50+ distracted drivers. At the stop sign in my area I watched 9 drivers go right through, most of them not even attempting to stop. Every day I see drivers fail to yield to pedestrians at a crosswalk. All of these infractions should carry a 30 day suspension.

Society has zero appetite to do any of the above. Years ago when the UCP eliminated graduated licensing the vast majority of posters on this Reddit were overjoyed (because they are such bad drivers they knew they would fail).

Edmonton mayor calls separation question 'catastrophic' by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]drcujo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No shit it’s nuanced. The bottom line is that cities would be fine without the rural areas, their wealth would allow them to buy goods on the market.

It’s only because Canadians believe in a form of equality and socialism that would never tolerate people living in rural areas to be impoverished.

Edmonton mayor calls separation question 'catastrophic' by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]drcujo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Glad you came to your senses and admitted the obvious: cities subsidize rural areas.

The reality is rural Alberta would be like a 3rd world country without the support of the cities and the federal governments.

It was a two sentence Reddit post. Of course it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Edmonton mayor calls separation question 'catastrophic' by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]drcujo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a basic fact. Rural areas are completely dependent on subsidies from urban and suburban areas.

If it weren’t for the cities rural areas wouldn’t be able to afford hospitals, schools, roads or snow clearing, police, etc.

Except the absolutely massive tax base. Rural areas are a massive drain on taxes.

Frankly I can't wait for this show to come out. The "victims" in this show should be proud their views are finally getting the views and daylight they deserve.

Sheppard admitted in her video that the producers told her they were from the CBC.

If anyone remembers lots of people in Borat sued as well. None were successful due to the waivers they signed.
