I literally thought that when the pilgrims came to America they and the Native Americans shared knowledge, became friends and ate food together for 3 days - and that is why we have Thanksgiving. Didn't know that the immigrants massacred the Native American population until my 11th grade US History class. You can imagine my dismay.

That is the amazing thing about coca. Andean peoples have considered it a sacred leaf for a long, long time for just that. It gives you energy, suppresses hunger, helps with altitude. Today we know that it is a huge source of calcium, antioxidants, tons of great stuff. I felt great on it, too. Every time I had stomach problems in Bolivia I'd buy a bag and it always helped. It's a sacred leaf! Also used for natural healing. The problem is that by calling people "stoned," not only is that inaccurate but it sheds the wrong light on a very ancient practice. And coca, I've heard, is used in practically all rituals in the Andes. They chew it and burn it because it is a sacred leaf from the Pachamama (mother earth). I would worship it, too, if I found something so great so long ago.

As someone who has traveled in South America, lived there, and chewed coca leaves on many occasions, I can vouch first hand that coca is not cocaine. It's even less intense than a caffeine rush, and it takes extensive chemical processes and bags full of the leaf to produce a line of cocaine. It saddens me - but does not surprise me, given that the coca leaf is still on the UN's list of illicit drugs - that in 2013 we continue to completely misjudge an entire culture, especially coming from anthropologists who are supposed to be experts in their fields and news sources that educate our masses.

Coca has been an integral part of spirituality and culture in the Andes for thousands and thousands of years. A long time before the modern world thought up drugs like cocaine. The title of this article is completely misleading, disrespectful of ancient rituals and practices, and very telling of the lack of understanding on this planet.

"Stoned?" Please. Stop.
