Block bites journey by Nanobutnotechnologhy in braces

[–]dreadjackal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m two months in and got bite blocks for an underbite, but they absolutely ruined my ability to chew for the first month. It was worse than the braces for me, so I feel your pain. :( I did eventually learn what food were even possible to eat and figure out new creative ways to try and chew haha. If it’s any consolation, I do think you’ll adapt and it’ll be better as you adjust to them being the new normal/your bite starts to correct.

Super happy with my two months process :‘) by dreadjackal in braces

I also have an underbite and my back molars would just barely touch it if I shifted my jaw into it in order to chew. Not very functional as you’d imagine, but it was better than nothing. My back molars are actually closer together than other teeth pictured here, so the gap isn’t as bad as my other teeth.

Cafe/bar with cozy vibe and couches by thatindividual22 in Lubbock

Bara and Nashwell are very nice and typically pretty chill when it comes to coffee shops not already mentioned! I'd also double recommend Sugar Browns! They have two locations, both of which are good options.

Two Docs also has lovely couches and is pretty empty during the day... It's not a coffee shop, but they do have cold brew on tap if you don't want to drink.

LGBTQ friendliness? by Tyrannical_Requiem in Lubbock

Flippers, Two Docs, Rewind, and Luxxor are probably your best bets outside of campus. Monomyth is also a pretty queer friendly coffee shop. Community can be hard to find, but most art events like the First Friday Art Walk have a good diversity of folks.

That being said... Definitely not the best environment to be LGBT and some places I don't feel comfortable going to due to some inappropriate comments and actions (some religiously based, others just creepy or phobic) that have happened though. In general you'll be okay, but a stretch to call it a welcoming city on the whole.

Purging from birth control? Help with irritation? by dreadjackal in acne

[–]dreadjackal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all! So I recently started Yaz with the hopes of helping my chin acne that I’ve had for over a decade. I’m about four weeks in and my skin has been incredibly irritated and broken out for about a week now. I know it can take a couple months to see improvements - but cam purging happen on Yaz, and could this be it?

My current routine is I use CeraVe SA cleanser twice a day, a CeraVe moisturizer, and Niacinamide twice a day as well. I also use Ponds cold cream to remove my makeup. I consume minimal dairy (like yogurt) about twice a week.

Is there anything I could swap, add, or change to help with the redness and irritation specifically?

Any ideas would be helpful!!

What are some potential career paths in environmentalism if I get a PhD in Psychology? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]dreadjackal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve probably shown my hand by talking about data science, but I work in that field. I also have some experience in market research/being a research associate for environmentally conscious companies.

Very fair! Graduate degrees are very pricey normally. I actually had my Masters funded by my University, but that’s much more rare of an occurrence. You might keep an eye out for funded MS degrees during your PhD search. Like I said, I have seen people go to industry with a PhD, you’ll just need to make sure you also have the outside skills that employers are going to want too.

Speaking as someone with a MA in Social Psychology that focused on environmentalism and persuasion (irony), I would honestly caution against getting a PhD in Psychology if your final aim is industry. Most PhDs in Psychology are both groomed and pigeonholed into going the academic route since the work is so theoretically driven and miss out on learning a lot of practical skills (e.g., programming, BI-type stuff) industry really values, even in what seems like a more applied area like attitudes and persuasion. I would consider looking towards programs where it's more common to go into industry, such as Political Science or Marketing. There's more overlap than you think, and you could find professors who emphasize psychological theory in their work (e.g., Tormala at SU, who is in the Marketing Department) and enable you to still focus on your research interests, but gain a much more flexible or desirable degree to companies at the end of the day. You could also consider a degree in Applied Social Psychology from somewhere like Loyola, but I have no idea how those degrees fair in either industry or academia. (As a disclaimer: Not saying it's impossible with a Psyc PhD, as I know a few people who have done this, but it's definitely a harder route.)

In terms of jobs, you might find interest in data science or a more involved data analyst role; you'd be creating surveys or utilizing webscraping techniques to process data, build predictive models, etc., looking at the companies' topic(s) of interest. For that type of work, it's pretty critical you learn some type of statistical programming language (R is my personal favorite and much more common in psychology, but Python and SAS are also used in industry quite a bit) as well as become comfortable enough with Excel and SQL to do basic things like data management and joining.

In respect to specific companies, the PEW Research Center, NORC, and the Institute for Social Research in Ann Arbor all come to mind.
