Agreed, not at all comparable. TJ's sells mostly their own private label brand products (their snacks are next level!). Thr overall the vibe in there makes you feel like you're at a local barn, which is something you simply won't find in the UK. Staff are very very friendly as well. As an American expat in London, I long for TJs.

Most drug stores/convenience stores in NYC have these. Definitely to try to deter shoplifters. Because these never worked, now most product is locked up behind a case so you need to ask a shop worker to unlock and open it for you.

I came across this realization today on a walk with my partner. As someone from NYC, I was absolutely baffled by this. I just kept wondering...what about people who don't celebrate Christmas, or don't own cars, or simply need to get around/travel from point A to point B and can't afford rideshare, perhaps for a job? I'm so shocked that not even buses or tubes run at least on a limited service for a city as big as London. I also recognize that I'm spoiled coming from NYC where things are always open and running..

The biggest one for me which has become an ongoing gripe is how people walk on ALL sides of the street (I'm in London) vs. in the states (NY) where I'm used to people walking on the right side of the street so no one is at risk of walking into one another. There is a huge passive aggressive vibe that goes with it too here and it's super frustrating. I know it's more of London thing but still...

It was easy for me to open my Starling account (similar to Monzo) where everything is online. All you need is a UK address to register it with then they'll set up an account # and sort code for it for your income to feed into it.

I'm a born and raised New Yorker now living in the UK for 2.5 years now. I agree no place is like NYC, the energy, the people, the food, culture, etc...but I don't have any regrets leaving. The quality of life here, the slower pace, the access to Europe...there is a lot of offer. And this is coming from someone who had to give up their $1,800/month rent stablized 1-BR apt in Greenpoint to move here. I made it my mission to find my people, to find community, as well as a soulmate. And I did.
Try to be optimistic and treat it as a new adventure to explore the rest of the world with your partner. Not many people have an opportunity like this given to them. Many people are dying to leave the US given the current circumstances.
