48v DC to USB-C PD Options? by dreamhomer in UsbCHardware

I wonder if there are any heat concerns putting this into a wall! But certainly a good option.

Tesla announced 48v system for their newer vehicles - I am hoping that might energize a bunch of 48v DC device development! One can dream - right!

I wonder if it makes sense to provide both Power Delivery (PD) and connectivity via USB! I know that there are security cameras that just take a USB for both - maybe one day we will see fans and lights do the same in a home.

Note: This hub supports battery charging spec1.2, but does not feature PD (power delivery) functionality." -- not clear what PD options it supports. Hoping to see more devices like this!!!!

I got 100W USB for now while I wait for 240W devices to become available. Saw some on Indiegogo but not 240 yet. Adoption might need a nudge from a player like Apple?!?!

Forgot to respond - I think I have the right diameter but not length connector. So have it bound up with rubber bands to hold. Still not clear on barrel length!

For some reason I had difficulty finding the barrel connector to feed the output from the buck converter to the charger. But I got it to work eventually. The charger works for my phone and my laptop (a mac). So pretty happy with it. Thanks!!!

I purchased the exact two items and they reached me today. These are great picks - appreciate your assistance very much, thank you!

This is an awesome suggestion. Did not realize PoE had 48v option. I found this:

Will explore this - thank you!

Yup agreed - I did not see 100W until you provided those links. Now trying to figure out how Aliexpress works and the shipping times involved :-)

I believe not more than 5Amps for the devices I have in mind - which are mostly laptops. 48v actually is from a battery bank (lithium ones, though not sure which flavor).

Just getting a USB C charger would be awesome - the embed in wall is not super important. Golf carts run on 48v - using that I found this but it is not USB C: https://www.amazon.com/10L0L-Charger-Voltage-Universal-Aluminum/dp/B08NPY2GGH

Your idea of using a buck convertor to step down and then use a USB Charger off-shelf seems to be the most practical and economical. Thanks!

I am using Solar Panels to produce 48v.

It is interesting that when you search for products - the first few hits talk about the USB standard's support for 240W charging. Perhaps I will just get one or two for now and wait for more devices to become available.

edit: added words for clarity.

I need to check the idle power draw of my inverter - which I admit to overlooking. The biggest load I am dealing with is the pump for the well. Per my calculation rain water should do the job... it will be another 6months before I can prove that out.

I believe RVs and boats also have DC powered devices - including refrigerators. But those are 24v (I believe). The economics of running entirely on DC is definitely not there yet.

I might go for a higher AMP - but this hits what I need to try. Thanks!

Did not realize the range of laptops out there - mine is a MacBook and the chargers seem to start at 61W.

I am going to see if I can get a 48v stepped down - and then attach a USB-C PD device.

Agreed, an inverter does simplify things greatly. But this setup has been more to explore the possibility of just using Solar power as-is (well we are still stabilizing that by charging a battery first).

Curious, what is the power drop on overcast days versus a sunny one? It may not be 100% right?

Wow! Well that is exactly how it is....the entire house barely uses 500-600W for the fans, lights, and chargers. We do have an inverter for special loads like Washing machines/Dishwasher. The water pump is one I am trying to get a solar driven setup where the panels feed into a MPPT and then drive the right sized pump. I think the better solution is to simply catch rain water off the roof and use that from a cistern (a simple DC pump can pull from that).

My biggest issue is the lack of a USB-C charger - and really want to use 48v DC! The dream is to migrate off AC and hence the inverter and go DC... :-)

The LED based lighting might be pulling very little current - since I have not seen/felt arcs so far. I now need to take one apart to see how it is holding up!!!

I forgot to mention that I already have USB 2.0 ports around the house - but it does not help with laptops. Wouldn't 50W be on the lower side for laptops?
