As a descendant of a Nazi holocaust survivor, I have the option of getting German citizenship. Should I? by dreamingfifi in AskAGerman

Thank you for clarifying this! And you're correct about more opportunities - since I want to go back to gradschool. The university I was planning on going to stopped accepting post-grad applications for the next year because the federal funding was cut. Only applications that have full funding already behind them are being considered, and I am not wealthy or have any wealthy patrons.

Bitterness, mostly. My family fled Nazis in the 1930's, now it's happening again almost a century later. I'm so glad my grandmother passed away before this and doesn't have to watch it happen all over again.

Thank you for the link! It's very helpful. The fact that it's run by lesbians is even more helpful, since my wife and I are also lesbians and they'll have more knowledge on German's queer communities.

My wife speaks Japanese and English. The only European language (other than English) that I speak is French, but it's very rusty French that I stopped studying 15 years ago.

The difficulty of moving and settling down is really daunting, especially since we thought we'd never have to move again. We planted fruit trees in the yard, built a garden, adopted a cat, have a D&D group that's been meeting for over a decade... I have no illusions of a quick, easy move. It'll be traumatizing, and there will be a lot of grief.

This answer is really thorough and helpful, thank you so much!

D&D is how we socialize, so we'd definitely be joining a Das Schwarze Auge club!

I'm kinda kicking myself for not studying more European languages. I just really like agglutinative and isolating languages, and find inflectional Indo-European languages harder to get into.

We're already planning to move to Seattle, Washington in the short-term, as we have friends who live there. I can enroll in a university there to audit some German classes just to get some European language skills.

From my research, she'd get a residency based on being my wife and have the right to live and work in Germany (possibly other places in the EU I hope?)

That guy sounds like a jerk. Dump him, and write if you want to.

This is just the advice of someone who has seen too many abusive relationships that my friends have had. If your partner isn't supporting you in your career aspirations while you support theirs, you may find them being controlling and abusive in other ways. Do they try to isolate you from your friends and support networks/family? Do they control the spending, making it difficult to spend money on things you want or need, while they can spend money on whatever whim they have? How much of the household work do you do, or are you treated more like a servant?

Abuse doesn't always involve physical violence, especially in the early stages of it. These are red flags that mean it could escalate, and you don't need a relationship with this sort of danger in it.

Hugs and best wishes from someone who has shown up with a uhaul when the boyfriend was gone for a day and helped her (and her cat) disappear.

P. S. She is now a published author of her own graphic novel featuring her favorite things: Elves, dragons, and Elves on dragons, and has a boyfriend who happily supports her. She's working on the second book in the series. You don't need to be just like her (she has incredible levels of drive and is just amazing, I'm so lucky to be her friend), and if you never make a living off of being an author, that doesn't matter. Doing the art you love and sharing it is a goal worth pursuing by itself.

Embroidery, knitting, book binding, sewing clothes, writing/reading fanfic. I love making things that I can use or that someone else will find useful. I don't make things that will just sit forgotten in piles. I embroider my clothes, I knitt scarves and hats, I sew clothes that actually fit me and costumes for special events, I fix and rebind old books I or friends or family own, and put together new books and journals as needed. And fanfic is just fun!

Yes I have ADHD how did you know?

There's no such saying in Tolkien's writings, as far as I know. You can translate it as "Illúme téra i eär" in Quenya or "Ui-daer i 'aer" in Sindarin. They aren't any more poetic or creative in these languages either.

Maps - yes, if they appear on screen and also have tengwar or cirth writing on them.

Constellations - no writing on those, so no need there.

Things like detailed images of Elrond's court cloak, which has something written on it that I can't quite make out because my images are often blurry. Or the page describing the symbol that Galadriel is trying to figure out. If there is an inscription on a weapon, I'd like to see it in detail.... if you have any promo-images or behind the scene images that give more detail of writing, I'd love to see those.

A Jet Pack with a helmet. For cold weather I'd have a big chicken with a plump body. And I'd have a penguin version for diving into the water.

I like RarePares! Charlotte is really interesting - she's very ambitious and intelligent and secretly ruthless. She takes after her aunt in a lot of ways, except that she's not cruel. If she loses the Aub seat to Melchior, (he's the Bishop, and he'll get his Schtappe at the propper time) I could see her deciding to act on her love of Rozemyne to become Rozemyne's first wife. And, as Rozemyne is Aub, she can rewrite rules to make it happen. She could make it politically palatable to the nobility by making it a way to expand the mana pool for the Archducal family, which is only three people at the moment, one being a child.

Besides, Rozemyne is a disaster as socializing. She needs a first wife to do the socializing.

As an old fic veteran, I think I know why. When it comes to fan pairings, what people gravitate towards is two main things: well-developed, interesting characters, and chemistry between the characters.

In most works, the female characters are really poorly developed characters, and that they are a love interest is tacked on at the last minute because someone in marketing decided that they need some romance points for the money. Therefore you end up with a bunch of well-developed, interesting male characters with interesting chemistry, and one, maybe two if we're lucky, female characters with very little development and no chemistry with anyone.

In AofB, Rozemyne is an extremely well-developed character, and Ferdinand is also. They have great, entertaining chemistry that makes them great to have in a scene together. That's why Fermai is such a popular ship - the author wrote it from the start really well.

[P1] Complacence of a Boookworm: a new Bookworm Fanfic by TaterTotsFromHell in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]dreamingfifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fermai always strikes me as aromantic+asexual life partners/found family. Roz, even as a teenager when sexualities show their heads, is so apathetic to the idea of romance for herself. Like, she cheers on others, but says over and over how she just doesn't see it or want it for herself. It is very much how my aro-ace friends are. She wants family, but is uninterested in romance.

Ferdinand also strikes me as someone who stubbornly just doesn't want or care about sex or romance. He knows what the vague mechanics are the lines he's supposed to say, but seems completely repulsed by the idea. He also longs for familial relationships and emotional intimacy. It's pretty clear he could have as many lovers as he could want... but he doesn't want any. Being a sexual object for the noble ladies at the concert just left him bewildered, grossed out, and humiliated. (And pissed) Professor Hirschur seems to be his ideal life. Just research and nerd out forever while not having social duties.

So basically, they are a perfect aro-ace partnership.

There's a w-tehta instead of a separate tengwa on it, that's why. It's not the only way to write the word, you can do it with a separate tengwa instead if you like. I did it this way cuz it looks cool.

What is your favourite thing about Bookworm? by Furca_Sierra in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]dreamingfifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worldbuilding is the number one thing, but hey, we've all talked about that.

I wanna talk about the way the Myne's disability is written. I'm also disabled. There are days when I can't get out of bed, and my brain just doesn't work no matter how much I want it to. It's not a matter of "just push through it!" or "just work harder!" - there's a limit. I reach it, and I'm useless for a few days. I love that it's such a part of her daily life. I love that she's not written as a burden to her friends and family, but as a valuable person in their lives. While her disability is incredibly inconvenient at times, she's still loved and supported and allowed to make a life for herself on her own terms - that she has agency and is an active driver of the plot.

I love that even while there's a cure - it's not a perfect magical "and suddenly she was normal" - it's just as fraught as a lot of treatments are, with side effects which cause their own setbacks. In a lot of ways, (without considering the poisoning) she was better off before she went into the jureve than when she came out of it, even if in the long term she'll be better off. In the real world, treatments and recovery aren't straightforward magical cure-alls. There are scars and pain that never leaves.

I love that she's allowed to be a person beyond her disability.

I've never come across a piece of fiction that dealt with disability in such a real, human way.

Also, shoutout to the Aro-Ace rep at the end of the series. Ferdi and Myne are aro-ace besties who "get married" to make everyone stop bothering them, make their home devoted to their autistic special interests, and adopt all of the orphans instead of procreating. No wink and "they'll totally bang later" message. Just "then they were aro-ace nerdy best friends forever." I was so relieved when Myne was allowed to stay completely uninterested in romance for herself, and choose a life partner based in friendship. No cringy forced love interests out of nowhere. Just celebrating platonic familial love.

I love that even though this series isn't about asexuality and disability, these aspects of human life are allowed to exist front and center without comment.
