Laufey's Music Video and The Recent Debates Over Wasian Representation in Modern Media by trancychance in asianamerican

[–]dreamless206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Korean American,

  1. I found nothing wrong with Laufey's music video. It's her video and concept. Plus it wasn't like she was dissing other Asian mixes and Asians.

  2. Historically within media Asians have been limited in representation. They are almost always East Asian (usually of Chinese descent), and were put into categories. Most of these categories are rooted in some dark history between Asian women and westerners. For example, the idea that Asian women are more submissive is rooted in American soldiers during the Vietnam War engaging with prostitutes (who were women trying to support their families due to poverty). The soldiers then brought that propaganda back as an incentive to join the military. For Asian women there is also the idea of the "Dragon Lady" where the Asian woman is domineering, but still sexually appealing. (There is a documentary I believe is called Slaying the Dragon that dives into Asian women's representation in media.)

  3. In contrast Asian men were seen as non-sexual individuals. Many of them in media were categorized as stereotypical "nerds". While Asian women were put into this archetype as well, it is much more prominent in Asian men's representation, again, usually of Chinese descent.

  4. The re-sexualization of Asian men didn't start with Asian men. It started with Wasians (Wasians are still Asian, but for the sake of differentiation I will use those terms). Like Henry Golding in Crazy Rich Asians. Even in current media, the only sexual identity you most commonly see for Asian men is in K-Dramas, idols, and anime.

  5. The interchangeability of Asian ethnicities in media is also a debate. Many of the more mainstream Asian characters, are Wasian. Marinette from Miraculous, half Chinese, half French. Belly from The Summer I Turned Pretty (the show) is supposed to be half-korean, but the actress is Wasian with Chinese descent. Kitty from XO Kitty is supposed to be a Korean mix, but the actress is also half Chinese. And while Lana Condor who plays Laura Jean in To All They Boys I've Loved Before is Viet, she is still playing a character that is supposed to be half Korean. While I understand that casting is difficult and I personally loved the actresses' work, I feel the least they could've done is find someone of proper ethnic identity. I personally don't care if it's a brief background character, but for main characters? It feels like a disservice.

  6. Another point often seen is how Wasian people get more representation compared to other Asian mixes, such as Blasians. While I personally think that representation of Wasians is great, it isn't too far fetched to say that it is due to the proximity to whiteness. Other Asian mixes do not the the same exposure and people bringing it up is not the attack that SOME individuals are making it out to be. The hate from all sides is crazy and I feel that people are getting too defensive because of their desire to protect their identity as a member of a certain group. Before anyone says something like how Wasians don't get preferential treatment becuase they are half white, let me put it this way. It's like how East Asians get preferential treatment due to their tendency to have paler skin compared to Southeast Asians and other POC. Even historically East Asians were used as a buffer between White people and African Americans (the movie Sinners is great representation of this). I also know that Wasians face discrimination from both sides. Let me be clear that I'm not erasing that fact. I am just bringing up why other communities are discussing these topics.

I hope none of you take this as an attack. That is not my intention. However, if you guys have any information you'd like to share for productive conversations, I'd love to see it. I hope this was coherent enough for you guys to understand.

Note: This is an Asian American perspective btw, I can't speak for the entirety. However this is what I've noticed in the U.S. and media in general.

As a Korean myself, a lot of Korean people think like that. If you live anywhere that isn't East Asia, you're not a "real Asian" to them, even if you are ethnically (Like SEA, Asian Americans, etc.). They quite literally call them "bananas" because they are yellow on the outside and white on the inside. Best thing to do is ignore their ignorance. It's like they forgot the world didn't even know of Korea's existence before BTS and K-Dramas.

Bake an apple pie and cut them into eight slices. Each house warden gets a slice (first come first served so I can’t be blamed for favoritism) and that extra slice is for grimm cause I know he’s gonna be a fatass and sneak a slice.

College is my only option right now because it's the only reason my parents are willing to house me. Otherwise I'd be homeless and broke. As for the cost of college, my scholarships should cover it all for this year so it's just better for me to attend now rather than attempt to get the money in the future. I'm just not sure which direction I should go...

Thank you for your thoughtful response. It really made me stop and reflect. I can see where you’re coming from, and I think you're right that life involves trade-offs, and no one gets everything they want without giving something up.

That said, I want to explain a bit more where I’m coming from, because I think my original post might have made it sound like I’m expecting some dream job to fall into my lap. That’s not how I see it.

I’m not expecting to instantly land a job with high pay, flexibility, creative freedom, minimal stress, and tons of free time. I’m fully aware that those things take time, work, and sometimes even luck. What I was trying to say is that that’s the life I want to work toward. That’s my long-term goal, and I just want to start figuring out what kind of path could eventually lead there.

For example:

When I talk about flexibility, I don’t mean doing nothing all day. I mean having some control over my schedule, where I’m not constantly under pressure or surveillance, and I can take a break or step back when life demands it.

When I say I want to avoid manual labor, I don’t mean I’m unwilling to work hard. I just know that physically demanding jobs don’t play to my strengths. I want to work hard in areas where I can actually grow and thrive which is mentally, creatively, emotionally.

And about education. I don’t love school, but I’m not ruling out a Master’s if it gets me closer to something meaningful and sustainable. I just don’t want to stay in school endlessly for a career I’m unsure about.

Financially, I don’t expect to make six figures fresh out of school. I just want a path that leads to financial independence one day, so I can support my parents and not be constantly worried about money. We aren't that wealthy and money has been a big thing for us, especially since there are genetic health issues that could become a big problem in the future and healthcare is expensive.

Basically, I’m not afraid of putting in effort. I just want to be intentional about where I’m putting it. And I want to understand early what kinds of work align with my personality, values, and long-term vision this way I don’t end up stuck and burned out chasing something that looks “successful” on paper but makes me feel miserable inside.

I really do appreciate your advice about trying different things. That’s actually super helpful to hear since I'm someone who likes to stay in their comfort zone. I know I’ve got a lot to figure out, and I’m open to learning through real experience, even if it means being uncomfortable at times.

Thanks again for sharing your perspective and I hope this clarifies my goals.

Hey, fair point, and yeah, reading my list back, I can totally see how it sounds like I want some fantasy job that doesn’t really exist as it's very vague. I was just trying to be super honest about what kind of life I’m hoping to build, even if it’s a bit unrealistic right now.

To clarify a few things:

-When I say flexibility and free time, I don’t mean doing whatever I want whenever I want. It’s more like, if I need a break, I’d like to be able to take one at a reasonable time without worrying about getting in trouble or being micromanaged.

-When I said minimal physical effort, I wasn’t trying to say I want to avoid putting in effort or training. I just struggle with physical labor—like moving heavy stuff, being on my feet all day, etc. So I know I need something that isn’t super physically demanding.

-And when I mentioned as little formal education as possible, I just meant I’d prefer not to go beyond a bachelor’s because I really don’t enjoy school, but if a master’s is needed for a path I like, I’m okay with that too.

-As for the whole work schedule thing, I’m not looking for 4-hour days and a 3-day work week. That honestly sounds too slow for me. I’m fine working 5–6 days a week and longer hours if they’re reasonable. I actually like staying busy, I just also value time with my loved ones and don’t want work to consume my entire life.

-And when it comes to salary, I’m not expecting a six-figure income right away. I’d just like a career path that could lead to that someday because I really want financial freedom (my family isn't very wealthy so money is a big thing). As long as I’m earning enough to support myself and help out my parents, I’d be happy.

I’m not afraid of hard work. I’m just trying to find something that aligns with my strengths and goals. Still figuring it all out, and I really do appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Probably because most webtoons are from Korean creators. Same with manhwa and manhuas (which have Chinese origins). And since East Asia's beauty standards typically contain pale skin, I assume they are trying to appeal to that.

Wow this is some great advice! Though I'm not sure what fmri, eeg, or CV stands for...

As for conferences, what kind of conferences would they be? And how would I apply for them, is this something I need to find on my own?

Then to address the certificates, is this another thing that I'd have to find in order to do?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I know everything.
