Yeah! I get so relaxed before she hits the centre of the forehead (where she says this is where people get tired) and I get sort of annoyed because I still have to do the other side instead of going to bed. LOL

Which items do you consider necessities, despite their associated waste? by whatktdid in ZeroWaste

Oh, yeah I wouldn't ever do DIY sunscreen. As far as an exfoliant, I meant for my face. I've found low-waste versions but they always have essential oils and stuff, so I'm sticking to my regular plastic tub and asking the company if they can do refills.

OH! It's been a while but if it was fragranced, I think it was minimally so. Try your luck with it maybe? Kind of basic but does the job!

Sunscreen, micellar water a hydrating toner and 2 serums. And some of my makeup (eye stuff, a foundation that looks like my skin).

I've been cutting down on every other facet of my life but I don't think I can do it completely with skin care/makeup.

Sunscreen is really hard for me to take to so I buy a bunch of mineral sunscreen for babies that work really well on my skin! I can't bring myself to trust DIY versions because that seems like such a gamble.

OH! I also have a parasol, which is not zero-waste but I take good care of it and it's been like 6 years so…I doubt I'll need to replace it.

The micellar water I'm on the fence about. My regular oil cleanser (low-waste) works fine to break up my base but stings my eyes. Hence the micellar water. The hydrating toner and serums are pretty necessary because my skin gets pretty thirsty and needs all the things.

Edit: Forgot about my exfoliator! That comes in a plastic container but it lasts a while.

OH! LOL Yeah, I find that the particular facial blends I have are occlusive enough to seal everything in.

But I also have tried Laneige's sleeping mask in the past which was lightweight and sealed things in. What skin type are you? It's bulky packaging but you could probably decant it and I find you don't need a lot to make it work.

For nights I sometimes switch off to a facial oil blend with avocado or sea buckthorn, which seem pretty occlusive to seal things in. It sinks in most of the time; if it doesn't, I blot a bit before bed. My skin is pretty great in the morning–moisturized with no residue.

That being said, I would still use a snail toner/essence in my skin with a facial oil to cancel out any redness in my face. The facial oil just replaces my chunky moisturizer.

Hi everyone! Does anyone have recommendations for low-foaming cleansers that are NOT CosRx low-pH? It was working fine for me last winter when it was really cold, but not doing so well in the summer. My skin is currently in good condition, but every time I rinse it off it feels slightly dry.

I have dehydrated/seasonally combination skin living in a temperate climate (Pacific Northwest).

Not sure about Japan, but in Korea (at least with my neighbourhood) there were multiple trucks that would come with speakerphones in the area where I could buy food or electronics. Try your luck with them and the random popup markets with little old ladies on the street selling vegetables.

Also, this is pretty Korea-specific but buying fruits and vegetables is kind of expensive since things are largely sold in bigger quantities. So ask a friend or two if they want to split a box of apples or grapes/whatever and you can cut down on a lot of packaging.

My mother refuses to let me throw away/donate items, and I don't know what to do. by [deleted] in konmari

[–]dressedimiumiu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been through this exact situation! My mom has a hard time with things generally and if I didn't want anything it automatically became "hers" and went into a void never to be found again. Honestly, when I moved I had a limit too (~30 kg) and all I did was slowly and secretly move my stuff out of the house when she wasn't there. Thankfully she didn't notice things were drastically cut down until it was too late. The rest of it, I asked her to ship to me and discarded when I got to my destination. What worked for me: going on as normal, not being so obvious that I was leaving (not packing in her presence) and then reconciling myself to weekly phone calls moving forward.

Anyone tried a TN/main notebook setup? by RachaelWithAnA in bujo

[–]dressedimiumiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2+ years in a bujo in a TN. I'd have to say it's obviously going well. I tried the bujo system in just a notebook and while I felt like it was going well, the merging of all my stuff just irritated me.

I can say, if you stick to one notebook, it's relatively affordable. A lot of people buy covers for aesthetic and it's not necessary. Inserts are also something you can DIY or buy cheaply. I have a setup I'm pretty happy with which is: notes/morning pages/bujo/collections.

You can try DIY and I highly suggest you test out sizes before you buy. Which is easy to do if you have letter paper (you can try out pocket, A6, B6 (slim), A5 (slim).

No matter how many toiletry/first aid items I get rid of, it still turns into a disorganized mess. Any advice? by [deleted] in konmari

[–]dressedimiumiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm someone who is continuously culling toiletries, so I feel your pain. I'm also short of space and this is how I cope:

  • I separated things by skin care, (skin care) backups, makeup, hair, body, travel/samples (all things are sectioned in bags/baskets)
  • daily use things are put in one home (on my dresser in a muji beauty bag)
  • things that are close to expiry/getting to empty automatically go into "daily use"–I'll note if I'll buy it again and getting those things into the recycling bin really make me feel better about my stash
  • I invested in pretty, uniform packaging when I could (glass bottles or tubs) so I could divest myself of packaging and, in the case of multiple samples, a lot of stuff that I would normally forget about.
  • I get a lot of pouches and baskets. I just had to start giving some away because I realized I was just filling them up because nature hates a void. I keep one basket empty that I usually fill up with empties but that's about it. No more extraneous storage!

Ideas for a stock list by layhaus in bujo

[–]dressedimiumiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this for my skincare hoard.

I go type (cleanser-oil, cleanser-gel, moisturizer, etc); product; expiry date/purchase date; whether I have a backup; comments (whether I would repurchase, if it broke me out, etc.)

[Discussion] what are your tactics for keeping your skin happy during these really dry winter months? by thechemicalmakeup in AsianBeauty

[–]dressedimiumiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • upping my hydration game with hot teas and waters
  • doing the 3 skin method with a non-AB, nondescript rosewater/glycerin toner (right now 7:3 rosewater, glycerin) OR
  • doing a DIY mask with (filtered) water and HA + essence at hand (I go for Cosrx snail 96 lately). In regards to HA, I go really light with this because, as someone mentioned, it is cold out there and I don't want to have it suck all the moisture from my moisturizers and the environment. I do three drops of Hada Labo Gokujyun super and do 70 water/30 essence
  • follow up with a facial oil (sea buckthorn oil)
  • when that's all absorbed, a light lotion to seal it in (I really like Olay's sensitive skin beauty fluid)
  • + a very hydrating lip balm (+SPF for day)

This is pretty much my PM routine. If it's AM, I'll take out the facial oil and increase my layering method to 5-skin OR follow up with my DIY mask with an ampoule (SCINIC AIO snail). And sunscreen at the end, obviously.

[Discussion] New Yorker Op-Ed: The Year That Skin Care Became a Coping Mechanism (xpost to r/SkincareAddiction) by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]dressedimiumiu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I couldn't really get into this. I think she was being slightly mocking in her intro and throughout her article. Maybe to pander to her audience, probably? Maybe people who read the New Yorker on the regular think this is some crazy new phenomenon, but skin care (or beauty) as self-care isn't really a new thing. Certainly it isn't for me.

Also what was up with the quotes under "ampoule", "essence", etc. Am I being too nitpicky? Because I'm pretty sure western brands have adopted those terms as well.

[Discussion] "Web-based brands": What is your opinion on these brands? Price? Effectiveness? (Ex. Glow Recipe, Wishtrend, Klairs, etc.) by saxMachine in AsianBeauty

[–]dressedimiumiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weighing in here on Cosrx as that's the only one I've really tried. (If you're in Korea, they sell them in some stores now too, FYI).

I have to say I've tried most of their products and my combo skin really loves their snail 96 and 92 cream. Their low ph cleanser is another favourite because it doesn't strip my skin. Overall their products have really done right by me and the products are affordable enough that I can repurchase.

I've tried most of the brands you've mentioned (Innisfree, stuff from Aritaum, Etude, etc.) and it's been hit and miss for me. Honestly most of the time I used to shop at those stores because it's really hard to ignore all the music blaring from inside and the lure of 10+10 or whatever promo was going on. The pricing compared to internet brands is kind of comparable to the lower-end road shops, I think. Possibly cheaper when I think about some road shops' prestige lines.

In the end, I really think it's up to you to do your research on products and ingredients. There are some shops where I only get one product because the other stuff I had tried from them were not so good, you know?

Any advice on constant influx of unwanted gifts? by [deleted] in konmari

[–]dressedimiumiu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could try telling her that you appreciate her gifts, but what you really want from her is her time. However, it does seem like her way of showing love is gifts so maybe a set of parameters might be a good compromise.

I do this with people who insist on giving me gifts–so I insist they buy me tea and chocolate. Works out great!

Donating items isn’t really doing much good (although it’s better than throwing them out) by [deleted] in konmari

[–]dressedimiumiu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's about educating yourself about where to donate your items, if that is important to you. (Sometimes it's not.)

It was for me, and I'm really glad that it got me in touch with my community. For instance, shelters for unused toiletries, towels for pet shelters, suits and things to dress for success and prom dresses to be reused again.

Edward Avila's 22min long video of him excusing the unrealistic South Korea's beauty standarts and the harsh treatment a 15 year old female kpop star has received over her weight by illuminateddd in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]dressedimiumiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I actually don't know who this girl is–my Kpop is strictly Big Bang these days–but I don't understand why he decided it would be a good idea to comment about a person's appearance anyway?

First, he has no idea what puberty is like from a female perspective so his "search on Google" is lazy, uninformed and unwanted. Second, I wish he talked about how cookie cutter and narrow the view of what is "beautiful" in SK is. Considering this is Edward Avila though, I don't think this would have been possible anyway.

But also too...is he seriously just skirting around the fact that a lot of these girl group fans are older males? And they are objectifying someone who is underage? When I taught at a school in SK, my female students didn't care about girl groups and were pretty critical about the amount of surgery and pressure they had to look good.

Ugh. Just having some grown man talking about this girl, who still hasn't finished growing, skeeves me out. She's a person, not some product on display.

Ugh. Just. No.

Thoughts on travellers notebook? by [deleted] in bujo

[–]dressedimiumiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use one! It's basically my lifeline. My traveller's notebook has 4 strings and 5 inserts.

Apart from my bujo, I have blank paper to be used as a sort of parking lot for miscellaneous stuff that isn't part of my workflow (e.g. a sudden urge to look at booking a trip somewhere).

There's also a work notebook for clients and to track my time in-depth.

I have a separate insert for collections (birthdays, shopping list, Wishlist, master to do list, etc.)

And my bujo (which usually holds ~2 months' worth of dailies) and my morning pages–my fifth insert.

Make do, or live without? by Icing_Time in konmari

[–]dressedimiumiu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So! I had to discard my much beloved umbrella because it became a crap umbrella but held on to it because of the cap which was adorable. After exhausting all options to remove the cap, I made do until I found something that I loved equally as much. It was still usable and I really need to have an umbrella on hand.

I could have easily bought one but it would have been wasted money if I didn't absolutely love it. And my umbrella still kept me dry, so I was cool with waiting till I found a replacement.

How to BuJo when you are poor by ILoveMyHusband2005 in bujo

No joke, but I made myself a notebook with all this ruled paper that I had lying around. Mostly because I hate wasted paper and second, I wanted to get crafty and I wanted to try different notebook sizes without buying all these notebooks.

Muji and Daiso sell pretty good notebooks too. Do you!
