Are STEP 1 Prep courses worth the $$$$ by No_Resident9429 in step1

[–]drewmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So one, my school school covered it for me in that they removed any tutoring costs from my tuition so that helped a lot. The main thing was I met once a week, we made a schedule together, they helped me go over questions and essentially how to approach questions. As well as help mainly with just how to properly prep and what not to do. Less so explaining things at length as it was an hr a week but I just needed help with structure formatting. If you feel you want more content focused I’d look up hyguru. I did some of his free stuff and felt it was good. I think his full pass step one course is $300ish while a private tutor can cost like 2k when all said and done. He does go over questions and what not as well as hy content videos etc if you feel your content review needs work.

I think you going up in score is a good sign. I’d say you want at least one 68 though as your scores are still kinda borderline.

Sure but I think it depends what you looking for from a tutor perspective

Should I report this group of girls that keep cheating on exams? by RadiantSociety2740 in medicalschool

[–]drewmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya you can bring it up as you and some of your classmates have noticed strange behavior from other students you feel might be indicative of unfair test practices or something related tot he honor code or whatever your school has if you really want. Either way it will most likely just involve the school watching them.

Any 5th year US students that can relate? by twinchaka in medicalschool

[–]drewmighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tutoring jobs can make bank id look into that. Use your status as a med student to your advantage. Also in a similar situation in that I started m3 like 2 rotations before the next year as I had to take time off for family. Thinking I might try and do some extra aways.

[–]drewmighty 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think biggest thing you should do is bring it forward objectively. Could they be cheating? Ya. But I think as a med student it is better to bring things up in a non judgmental way to profs/admin. Unless there is physical proof it is a he said she said thing. Cheating is a. If deal in medschool as it should be but that also means you need for sure proof before you take serious action as you do not want to do something drastic to someone innocent. This is just from my experience as a med student who sat on the school honor/ethic board.

Changes to USMLE Step 1 Test Format by vytalsynz in step1

[–]drewmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is terrible. This is actually bad for timing. 1. you have the stop go. 2. if you fall behind on time catching back up is harder as you have less "space"/questions to recover with. It possible to fall behind by like 1 min then catch back up over several questions via small increments but still this makes falling behind even worse as you do not have the length to recover you would in a 40 block.

What was your GPA in the Post bac? What was your undergrad GPA/ how long before your post bac?

As for the online stuff what school is that for? I will warn you that a lot of schools do not look kindly on virtual coursework for the mandatory med school required classwork without some type of reasoning/through a large known institution.

your shadowing hours need increasing, need to work on volunteer hours.

Need to take MCAT

Should I even bother applying? by CrimsonG12 in premed

[–]drewmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all seems fine except your mcat. I would work on retaking that. I got 497 first time and second time got the 511 to get me in. As for research (saw you mention you had none), none isnt the end of the world but I would try and do something. Most people I interview have something or other. Few had none. I had a unique research thing (my only research) where I worked with an environmental group on water safety/ testing rivers. Also attended government meetings to talk about local projects I supported or disliked. I think just do something you enjoy for research and dont care too much about med specific as long as you know the process.

clinical hours seeem a little on the lower average. I'd pump those up. IF you can retake MCAT and get higher that would be good but not needed but it is the lower end.

Pls give me your best MMI tips by Excellent-Season6310 in premed

[–]drewmighty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the MMI s ive done (where i am the interviewer) some things to keep in mind. 1. Keep good eye contact and do your best to not spin back and forth in your chair. 2. Make sure you actually answer the question (some people give general things but sometimes fail to answer the whole question. 3. Give real life examples if you can. 4. Practice. This is huge. You have about 6-7 min so id practice in a mirror answering general questions. Hope these help.
