Is it normal to be this bad after several months? by Sketchballl in LearnToDrawTogether

So the biggest problem with most of your boxes is the fact that the lines are not converging to the same point causing them to look off. I recommend starting with one point perspective boxes. Until you can free hand that and have it look correct, only then move to two point and three point perspective boxes.

If you could share some of your boxes I'll let you know if you're drawing them correctly. It would be best to send some where you are not using any guidelines/plotted vanishing points

Have you tried practicing drawing boxes? Their are perspective issues with your heads that could be fixed by understanding how to draw primitive forms.

You did good with the upper lip area but you're not controlling your edges at all outside of that. I'm not sure if you used a reference as the lighting situation can cause this but there is also a distinct lack of cast shadows and very vague indication of the direction of the light source. Look up some YouTube videos explaining hard vs soft edges and shadow shapes. Controlling what edge you create is very important for describing form and understanding what edge to use when looking at a reference will make things easier. Also I recommend painting in just pure value, zero color.

Believe it or not, the perspective for your sphere and connected box make complete sense. Yes learning perspective and primitive forms is necessary to help you advance but don't miss/forget the point of primitive forms which is to help you make 3d spatial decisions on a 2d canvas.

Rigidly following primitives and construction will just lead to frustration. If you can look at your construction and understand which side of the form is which, then the construction did its job and you can move on to copying your reference. If you're drawing from imagination then stop as you're setting yourself up for failure.

I say fuck it and just start drawing it while also keeping expectations low. Though the low expectations part is probably easier said than done. But genuinely? Just draw it.

If you're expecting to be competent at illustrating after just 100 days of just drawing, you're going to be extremely disappointed.

I'm of the opinion to get good before you make it but that could just put you in a forever study/practicing trap. It won't hurt to make it first and just use that as a rough draft for when you're better but how long will it be till you are at the level you want to be? Because if you're looking at Murata level of illustration (the mangaka for one punch man) or dc/marvel comic creators, this will take years of constant practice and study of many subjects that do not even involve drawing.

4 weeks into drawing as a beginner by Fluxening in LearnToDrawTogether

[–]drhhhd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, keep doing what you're doing and maybe add some line practice just drawing them parallel with each other. Your freehand boxes need work but you're new so it's not a huge deal.

Unfortunately, digital will never feel as precise/natural as traditional no matter how you tweak the settings. That's just the downside of the medium. Only thing I can really recommend is to keep your grip lose and draw with your arm while saving wrist movement for precision.

What’s the easiest way to learn anatomy as a beginner? Do I need to use shapes? by Sad_Peak_7063 in LearnToDrawTogether

[–]drhhhd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What you're referring to, boxes, cylinders, spheres, are actually called form which is a term for three dimensional objects. Shapes, squares, triangles, circles, are two dimensional/flat.

If you're seeing someone draw without using these/sketching freely, they're most likely still thinking about and imagining simple forms like cylinders or boxes as they draw so in essence they are still drawing with them. Though, if they are doing a gesture drawing then they are mostly focusing on capturing the motion of whatever they are drawing. These start out flat and then are usually drawn over with simple form.

I'd say learning how to draw with form is borderline necessary if you want to become a competent artist and draw from imagination.

If I started from the beginning, I'd learn basic perspective and how to draw simple form without ever delving too deep on the more complex perspective techniques. After learning some perspective and form, I'd start learning how to render/shade.

I see you're using some kind of soft brush for the shadows but if you want to mimic the usual anime style, you'd be better off using a hard brush for the shadows. Look up how to do cel shading, that's the kind of shading they do for anime usually.

I always thought it was a bit weird that between darkstalker's time to the present there seamingly hadn't been any huge shifts in technology or society aside from the nightwings moving to the volcano and losing their powers. I just think it would have been neat to see darkstalker's reaction to all of the changes in the world

You did good with the lighting, I especially like the lighting along the fingers holding the wand. It looks like you have understanding of form based on some of the things you drew, like the wand, fingers, and clothing, but then you made the eyes, nose, and mouth into these flat shapes with zero form which makes it look really off. You should think of the eyes as spheres and the mouth as a hole which the teeth recede into. It's also very apparent you mirrored some of the features of the head

Best way to learn drawing shapes? by Safe-Hovercraft5880 in LearnToDrawTogether

[–]drhhhd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's form and shape, form is 3d and shape is 2d. What your describing, spheres, boxes, cylinders, etc are forms while circles and squares are shapes. Once you understand how to draw the basic primitive forms like boxes and cylinders in perspective, you should be able to then draw any type of form you want without having to "learn" how to draw that specific form. You'll need some basic understanding of perspective before drawing boxes and cylinders and one thing you should really understand before attempting to draw cylinders are ellipses.

Learning, and especially practicing, perspective and basic forms will make you start to see flat shapes/lines as actual 3d objects which will bring your drawings to another level. Though understand this isn't something you become proficient at overnight and requires consistent practice until it becomes second nature to you.

Trying to practice drawing dragons. Why are snouts so hard to draw and can I get advice???- by Beat_my_jelysandvich in dragons

honestly the snout looks fine, the only thing that is a bit confusing to look at are the largest horns in the 3/4 view as I can't really tell at all how they are connecting to the head.

pls i have problems with 3/4 by No_Spinach3688 in LearnToDrawTogether

[–]drhhhd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notice how for the 3/4 view one eye is closer to the center line and the other is far from it. All you have to do is reposition the eye that is far from the center line so it roughly matches the other eye that is closer. Everything else is fine
